POSITION SUMMARY
The Referral Coordinator supports the mission, goals, and values of Nevada Donor Network, Inc. (NDN) by serving as the first point of contact for potential tissue and ocular donors. This role is responsible for receiving and documenting donor referrals, conducting preliminary medical record reviews, and determining initial donor eligibility in alignment with regulatory standards and processor criteria.
The Referral Coordinator ensures accurate case documentation, timely communication with hospitals and other stakeholders, and smooth case transition to the Approach Coordinator for family authorization and further allocation.
A successful Referral Coordinator demonstrates attention to detail, effective communication, strong critical thinking skills, and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Essential Functions Statement(s):
- Receive and document all donor referrals in a timely, accurate, and professional manner.
- Serve as the initial point of contact for hospitals, coroners/medical examiners, and other referral sources.
- Conduct preliminary reviews of medical records, electronic health records, and available clinical information to assess potential donor eligibility.
- Apply established medical and processor screening criteria to identify potential suitability for tissue and ocular donation.
- Accurately enter donor information and referral data into designated databases in real time.
- Communicate effectively with hospital staff, coroners, funeral homes, and other key stakeholders to collect essential referral information.
- Prepare case files and documentation for seamless transition to the Approach Coordinator.
- Identify and escalate complex or uncertain cases to designated leadership or on-call staff for further review.
- Maintain confidentiality, accuracy, and compliance with all NDN protocols, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in required training, continuing education, and performance improvement initiatives to maintain proficiency.
- Support departmental performance goals by meeting or exceeding established metrics for referral response and case preparation.

- Other duties as assigned to support the success of the Donation Services team.

SKILLS & ABILITIES
Education: Successful completion of a healthcare technical or professional program with current certification such as Emergency Medical Technician, Critical Care Tech, Emergency Room Tech, Intermediate or Licensed Practical Nurse, OR Hospital Corpsman, OR Associates Degree from an accredited college/university in a relevant Science major/program such as Biology, Chemistry, Social Work or Healthcare Administration. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
Experience: One year of related work experience in organ, tissue or eye procurement may substitute for education. MUST understand disease processes and medical terminology.
Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office programs including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and social media platforms. Minimal keyboarding/typing skills at 45 wpm.
Certificates & Licenses: May require AATB certification as a Certified Tissue Banking Specialist within 3 years of employment. Must maintain AATB certification once achieved.
Other Requirements: Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills. English language proficiency; a second language preferred. Required understanding of disease processes and medical terminology. Other requirements as assigned.
