The Opportunity with McKinstry
We are currently seeking a Finance Senior Principal to join our dynamic team as a member of our growing Finance and Accounting division in Seattle. This position will provide financial leadership to business divisions in the development and execution of financial strategies to drive growth and profitability. This role will focus on budgeting, forecasting, strategic planning, risk management, capital allocation, and complex financial modeling. Additional responsibilities may include:
Strategic Financial Planning:
· Develop and execute comprehensive financial strategies aligned with the company’s long-term vision and goals.
· Lead advanced financial modeling to support scenario planning, forecasting, and strategic decision-making for department and corporate initiatives.
· Identify growth opportunities, including new markets, partnerships, or acquisitions, and evaluate their financial viability.
· Act as a key finance liaison with operations leadership to link business unit and company financial strategies.
Financial Modeling and Analysis
· Build and maintain complex financial models to evaluate business unit economics, incorporating variables such as backlog, headcount, cash position and market conditions.
· Develop sensitivity analyses and stress-test models to assess the impact of cost overruns, delays, or economic fluctuations on profitability.
· Integrate key performance indicators (KPIs) into financial models to track business unit and division financial health.
· Create cash flow models to optimize financing expense, accounting for contractual payment terms, project timelines, and working capital requirements.
· Lead business units through annual corporate strategic planning process including business planning, investment business cases, and annual budget & forecast processes.
· Responsible for monthly and quarterly company and business unit financial statements, business planning and financial reporting and analysis.
· Partner with finance leadership as to the development of enterprise financial policies, conduct special studies, and collaborate with various departments in the preparation of statistical studies.
Investment & Portfolio Analysis
· Develop detailed financial models to assess the viability of new business ventures, including potential expansion into new markets, service lines, or innovative project delivery methods
· Conduct detailed financial analysis to assess the ROI of capital investments, supported by detailed financial models.
· Manage a portfolio of capital investments, using models to track performance metrics and identify optimization opportunities.
· Provide strategic guidance on resource allocation based on model-driven insights.
· Evaluate and structure financing for joint ventures, public-private partnerships, or major infrastructure projects.
Risk Management & Market Insights
· Assess financial risks related to market trends, commodity prices, and construction-specific challenges (e.g., supply chain disruptions), incorporating risk factors into financial models.
· Develop hedging strategies or other risk mitigation tools, using modeling to evaluate effectiveness in protecting the company’s financial position.
· Monitor industry trends and competitor performance to inform strategic financial decisions and update models accordingly.
Innovation & Process Improvement
· Drive the adoption of advanced financial tools, technologies, and analytics to enhance strategic decision-making.
· Streamline financial processes to improve efficiency and scalability in a fast-paced construction environment.
Leadership Functions
· This position will provide leadership and guidance within Finance and may directly manage a small team.
· Under the guidance of the Finance Director, lead, mentor and develop the financial team to support the company’s financial requirements.
· Collaborate with Finance leadership in defining staffing needs and position requirements.
· Participate and support hiring and onboarding new employees.
· Provide training and coaching.
· Support or conduct performance evaluations.
Other duties as assigned.
What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry
· 12+ years of experience in finance, with at least 7 years in a strategic or leadership role.
· Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting or related field or equivalent work experience required.
· Extensive experience in building and managing complex financial models, preferably in construction or manufacturing sectors.
· Proven success in developing and implementing financial strategies for large-scale projects or organizations.
· Strong understanding of construction project economics, including cost structures, contract management, and market dynamics.
· Outstanding communication and presentation skills to translate complex modeling outputs to diverse stakeholders.
· Visionary, proactive, and able to balance strategic foresight with practical execution in a dynamic industry.
· Strategic and results-oriented collaborator with multiple stakeholders; able to lead large-scale projects and reprioritize as necessary.
· Strong analytical, strategic, and critical thinking skills with expertise in Excel financial modeling
· Experience using ERP tools, financial and operational databases, and accounting software
· Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Visio required; working knowledge of SharePoint preferred.
· Knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative data collection, metrics & analysis required.
· Knowledge in developing reports from scratch using Business Objects or Crystal Reports required.
· Prior Business Intelligence development and design is preferred.

The pay range for this position is $123,570 - $214,110 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. Base pay information is based on market location.
