The Opportunity with McKinstry

We are currently seeking a Quality Engineer to join our dynamic team as a member of our growing Offsite Manufacturing division in Spokane, WA. This position will apply engineering methods to support quality assurance, validate processes, and resolve product non-conformances at the tactical/technical level. This role is highly influential and collaborative, demanding strong collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Work closely with engineering, production, and supply chain teams to solve complex quality issues, drive continuous improvement, and ensure that our product components and assemblies meet rigorous quality and reliability standards. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on problem-solver with a strong background in mechanical engineering and a deep understanding of manufacturing processes. Additional responsibilities may include:

 

Quality Engineering Supports

  • Develop and maintain inspection and test plans (ITPs) /Quality Control Plans (QCPs) for new and existing products.

  • Create and validate First Article Inspections (FAI) and assist with Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA).

  • Support statistical process control (SPC) and measurement system analysis (MSA).

 

Production & Process Quality

  • Work with production teams to implement in-process quality checks and ensure compliance to work instructions.

  •  Support development and utilization of product traceability systems.

  • Conduct capability studies (Cp, Cpk) to verify process stability and identify improvement opportunities.

  • Support welding, brazing, piping, and electrical quality verification per ASME, AWS, and UL requirements.

  • Ensure lessons learned from previous projects are used to improve the quality management process.

 

Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement

  • Oversee containment and countermeasure activities when production defects are discovered. Lead and document root cause analysis (RCA) for nonconforming product and field issues.

  • Develop and monitor Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) in collaboration with production and engineering.

  • Develop production control plans, quality checklists, and non-conforming material review process.

  • Drive continuous improvement projects to reduce defects, rework, and warranty claims, using production quality data to identify and prioritize activities and report the success of improvements to management

 

Supplier Quality

  • Assist with incoming material inspections and supplier qualification audits.

  • Partner with suppliers to resolve nonconformance issues and verify corrective actions.

 

Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure traceability and documentation of inspections, testing, and certifications for modular products.

  • Create and maintain quality-related documentation, including inspection reports, work instructions, and quality records.

  • Maintain compliance with applicable codes, certifications, and standards (ISO 9001, ASME, UL, ICC-ES, LEED).

 

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.

  • 2–5 years of experience in a manufacturing quality engineering role, ideally in mechanical systems, modular construction, or prefabrication.

  • Knowledge of mechanical fabrication processes (sheet metal, piping, brazing, electrical integration).

  • Familiarity with quality methodologies such as PFMEA, SPC, MSA, PPAP, and GD&T.

  • Experience with quality standards and codes: ISO 9001, ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, UL, and ICC-ES.

  • Proficiency in ERP/MES platforms and quality software (inspection checklists, digital QMS).

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven mindset.

  • Effective communicator with ability to work across engineering, operations, and suppliers.

  • Hands-on, detail-oriented, and able to perform inspections in shop-floor conditions.

  • Able to support multiple projects in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, MS Project, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Outlook and Visio required.

  • Experience in Project Management, to include PMI certification, preferred.

  • Experience in LEAN Manufacturing preferred.

  • Lean Belt Certification preferred.

  • SO 9001:2015 Lead Auditor certification.

  • Working knowledge and understanding of the ISO 9001:2015 Standard and its application.

  • ASQ Certification.

  • USACE CQM-C.

  • OSHA-10 or OSHA-30 Certification Preferred.

The pay range for this position is $75,870 - $128,900 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. Base pay information is based on market location.
