Title: Communication & Content Associate

Location:4822 N. Broadway, Chicago, IL 60640

Schedule: 5 hours per week, Monday to Friday (9:00am -10:00am)

Heartland Human Care Services (HHCS) is seeking a Communications and Content Associate to join our mission-driven team dedicated to advancing human rights and social impact. In this role, you’ll support the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications by shaping content strategy, creating compelling materials, and using multimedia storytelling to expand awareness and diversify revenue for our programs.

Your creativity and communication skills will help bring our mission to life, showcasing the impact of our work and inspiring others to join in. By leveraging best practices in communications, you’ll strengthen our brand, support fundraising, and contribute to a culture of collaboration and purpose.

Essential Functions: 

Duties & Responsibilities 

Content Development 

  • Collaborates with the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications to adapt content pieces for multiple platforms including website, social media, print and e-newsletters, and other media.
  • Ensures alignment/consistency of production of internal, external, and marketing content pieces.
  • Contributes to content planning and production timelines of the marketing communications department.

Research and Support  

  • Researches and identifies organization content opportunities and craft story concepts that reflect the organization’s impact on participants’ lives. 
  • Supports the storytelling pipeline by producing regular timely and evergreen multimedia content while growing the asset library.
  • Provides support with writing, editing, and proofing of content pieces.

Media Monitoring and Project Management 

  • Provides external communications support including media monitoring and sourcing potential media stories/pitches.
  • Provides design and project management in support of the production of communications materials.
  • Oversees project management of long-form content pieces for fundraising opportunities.

Development and Fundraising Communications Support 

  • Serves as key member of the development, communications, and marketing department at fundraising events as needed.
  • Events may require occasional work outside of standard business hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelors degree in marketing, communications, advertising, liberal arts, or journalism.
  • Minimum One (1) year relevant experience. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A): 

  • Proficiency with basic design concepts and print requirements:
  • Understanding of Canva design platform
  • Understanding of basic design functions within Constant Contact email platform
  • Photography experience a plus
  • WordPress website experience a plus
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in fast-paced environment.
  • Access to regular, dependable and timely transportation 
  • Ability and comfortability working with people of varying socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills. Strong networker, convener, relationship builder and communicator with experience collaborating with diverse work teams and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information possessing skills to handle situations in a professional and diplomatic manner.
  • A high degree of collaboration and emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and analytical ability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; and other software routinely used by Heartland Human Care Services.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision.
  • Strategic thought partnership and consultancy skills.

Work Arrangement:  

This role is eligible for hybrid work arrangement. It is expected this person would be able to meet for in person meetings when needed or at the request of others. In-person meetings may be required on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, etc.), and to attend events and functions occasionally. 

Work Environment:  . 

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Each program site operates on a 24/7 basis, 365 days per year.  To meet both the needs of our participants and contractual obligations, employees are required to be flexible in regard to scheduling and work location.  
  • Program sites are located throughout the Chicago area, including the North and South sides of Chicago, as well as the suburbs. Employees may be required to report to any one of our locations on a temporary or permanent basis.

Physical Demands:  

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand and walk.
  • The employee must be able to stoop, kneel and/or crawl.
  • The employee is regularly required to use hands to key, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. 
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 
  • The employee must have unrestricted ability to provide physical restraint.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
