Department/Division/Group Information

The Quality Management Office (QMO) works with line organizations on developing and delivering programs, activities, and services that integrate quality assurance, environmental, and safety management principles throughout the Laboratory. The Standards-Based Management System (SBMS) Office, within the QMO, provides Laboratory-wide procedures and guidance for performing work safely and in compliance with our internal and external requirements. All work at the Lab must comply with the minimum requirements specified in SBMS documents.

Position Overview

The QMO has an immediate opening for a Standards Based Management System (SBMS)Manager. The SBMS Manager will work with staff and managers at multiple levels to develop clear, user-friendly institutional procedures that effectively communicate what staff need in the execution of work in support of the BNL science mission. This position will also represent BNL as a member of the Battelle Community of Practice for management System Deployment. This position will report to the Quality Management Office Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads the Standards-Based Management System (SBMS) and Requirements Management functions for the Laboratory, which provide the compliance basis and management system structure for the institution.

  • Manages the editorial and Requirements staff to support the development, revision, and publishing of SBMS documents

  • Engages with Laboratory-Level leaders in the development and implementation of management system processes and systems to support institutional-level operational excellence, compliance and safety.

  • Provides an organizational framework that supports the management of contractually based requirements and the development of clear institutional procedures and processes that effectively communicate the information staff need to perform work safely and compliantly.

  • Manages the SBMS Editorial team, the Requirements Coordinator, as well as matrixed IT support staff who develop and maintain an effective SBMS content management system, the SBMS website, the Requirements Management System, and any successor platforms.

  • Develops and oversees effective processes for requirements management and SBMS content development, revision, and publication that support the integrity of the standards-based approach.

  • Communicates with Senior Leadership to promote SBMS and Requirements Management initiatives and ensure a full understanding of the management system structure and its value to the institution.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field plus at least six years of full-time professional experience with increasing responsibility. This should include experience editing electronic documents and prior editorial work.

  • Two years of experience in a leadership role, such as managing, supervising, or leading a team.

  • Proficiency of English grammar, editorial skills.

  • Knowledge of good practices related to managing electronic document systems.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio, and Adobe Acrobat.

  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to synthesize meaning and intent into clearly written documents.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication and team building skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • Developmental editing (substantial editing of content for clarity, paragraph structure, sentence flow, word choice, etc.) copyediting (editing for proper grammar and punctuation), and proofreading (final quality review).

  • Familiarity with HTML and current web publishing tools (e.g., Adobe DreamWeaver).

  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) guide.

  • This is a fully onsite position located at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $121600 - $148350 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
