Job Title: Community Health Worker

Department: Community Health Action

Supervisor: Gender & Health Program Manager

Location: This position will be primarily located in DC but needs to be able to move between locations as needed. This position will be working on site, and remotely as needed.

Classification: Non-Exempt/Hourly


Synopsis:

This position works within the Community Health Action Department to support community interventions promoting gender equity through the implementation of initiatives aiming to prevent gender-based violence and to promote sexual & reproductive health, using health literacy approach, participatory health education methodologies, and peer-based strategies, targeting Latina immigrant women in the Washington DC Metropolitan area. This position will also support health education activities provided to patients referred by La Clinica’s care teams.


Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:

• Minimum High School diploma, or GED, or an equivalent three-year combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills may be obtained.

• Proficient Spanish oral and written.

• Knowledge of Latino immigrant community in DC Metro Area, including Prince George’s County and Montgomery County in Maryland.

• Knowledge of gender justice and women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights.

• One year minimum experience working/ supporting services either in gender-based violence prevention or sexual and reproductive health.

• One year of experience working/ using social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram).

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Bilingual Spanish/English; bicultural.

• Knowledge of participatory and popular education methodologies.

• One year minimum experience with program implementation, including executing work plans.

• One year minimum experience implementing recruitment strategies for gender-based violence prevention and/or health promotion interventions.

• One year minimum experience implementing health education services.

• One year minimum experience advocating for individuals and community needs and building individual and community capacity.

• Experience with legal system navigation.

• Experience with logistical support for program activities.

Required Skills/Abilities/Certifications/Licenses:

• Ability to work with diverse populations.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills in Spanish. Ability to communicate in English as needed.

• High motivation to advocate for gender equality, health equity and promoting women’s rights.

• Strong ethical core.

• Ability to implement a health education social media strategy.

• Ability to encourage greater social media participation.

• Proficiency with Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and other social media platforms.

• Computer literate in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).

• Interpersonal and problem-solving skills, detail oriented, teamwork-oriented, self-starter, highly organized.

Preferred Skills/Abilities/Certifications/Licenses:

• DC, MD, or VA Community Health Worker certification.


Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Implement work plan ensuring completion of the Gender & Health Program’s deliverables following internal guidelines and protocols, including but not limited to:

a. Reaching assigned recruitment work plan’s goals for health promoters and participants.

b. Support recruitment, training, coordination, and retention of health promoters’ activities.

c. Recruiting and co-facilitating support groups, small-talks skills-building, and other educational sessions.

d. Reaching assigned work plan targets for individual, group and community-level interventions.

e. Support implementation of training based on popular education for peer health educators.

f. Provide monthly written reports on progress meeting work plan’s goals, as required.

g. Support coordination and scheduling of program appointments for clients. Includes calling clients to inform them of changes in schedules or cancelled appointments.

h. Handle phone/face-to-face contacts with clients and individuals seeking information regarding the Gender & Health Program.

i. Support Navigation services for program participants linking them to health care, social and legal support services and ensuring retention.

j. Support screening services.

k. Update social media platforms with program’s prevention messages, calendar of activities and information.

2. Support community outreach efforts, including:

a. Identify potential areas for engaging in outreach events (based on existing community mapping).

b. Assist the implementation of community outreach events.

c. Conduct social media activities on Facebook and other sites.

d. Advocate for individual and community needs building individual and community capacity.

e. Support program health promoters and participants attending community forums, coalition meetings, hearings, and other community events.

f. Collaborate with participatory research activities, including surveys development, focus group implementation and context analysis and discussions.

3. Administrative:

a. Provide logistic support for weekly and monthly support groups and monthly educational workshops.

b. Support administration of assigned program’s expenditure budget, ensuring expenditures according to approved budget and reporting them as required by internal Financial procedures.

4. Data monitoring:

a. Collect and report data from each activity performed following program guidelines.

b. Support data monitoring and quality assurance efforts.

5. Networking and Collaboration:

a. Support coordination of work related to the Gender & Health with staff within and outside La Clínica.

b. Represent La Clinica at relevant meetings and coalitions within and outside La Clinica, as required.

6. Other duties and responsibilities:

a. Attend required trainings to increase/maintain skills.

b. Attend program, department, and all staff meetings and all mandatory La Clinica activities.

c. Follow La Clinica’s Code of Conduct and all other personnel Policies and Procedures.

d. Perform other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

• None.


Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

• Must be able to lift up-to 30 pounds at times.

• Must be able to work outside and stand-up for prolonged period during outreach events.

• Must be able to work on a flexible schedule, available some evenings and weekends.

• Able to perform duties in different La Clinica’s locations as required.

• Able to perform duties and responsibilities remotely when needed.
