When people think of law firms they think of movies and television shows with courtroom drama and investigative excitement. Reality may not be far off but the only way firms get to do that important work is if the business of a law firm is running well. Did you know that lawyers, like doctors, are constantly educating themselves on the latest changes to the law and also must remain compliant and be certified? Did you know if a law firm has lawyers who are not it could result in penalties and other risk for the firm? CE Manager is a tool that provides accurate and up-to-date compliance rules and calculations. It allows firms to ensure compliance across jurisdictions, automate processes and integrate with existing HR systems and education/course content providers. Our mission at Litera is to provide law firms with an easy to use application for tracking their lawyers’ compliance and we call this CE Manager.

We’re looking for a Product Owner who is not afraid to lead and with peers, make the hard decisions needed to deliver software that provides an excellent world-class experience. You collaborate with our Design and Technology teams to bring new features to market. This role supports the complete product lifecycle including developing and managing the roadmap, launching new features with Marketing, Sales and Support, planning on communicating new features to users and gathering feedback to refine what’s been released.

Product Owner Overview

A Product Owner works closely with internal customer support and engineering teams to guide new features and products from idea to release by working with scrum teams to define and execute changes to products. A Product Owner spends much of the time working with the product management team to understand key customer workflows to identify gaps, collaborate to create solutions to solve problems that drive value, translate business needs and technical requirements into epics for scrum teams to execute, and deliver solutions to make customers happy.

A Day in the Life

  • The Requirements: Define engineering efforts through authoring Epics and Stories that clearly define WHO the feature or experience is for, written in the user voice and the WHY this effort is valuable. Clear prioritization is critical, working with the Product Management team to produce a rolling monthly updated roadmap modified and fresh based on latest data and customer information.
  • The Story, The Vision: Everyone from engineering, QA, User Experience, marketing etc. need to know what story we are trying to tell with the work we are doing. Not the “What” but the “Why” does it matter. A coherent vision told as a story in the user voice is critical for aligning all disciplines to the same goal.
  • The roadmap: What is coming next? When is it coming? You will help the product management team support the beating heart of the Product Development organization by helping update the roadmap monthly with latest priorities based on customer data, engineering team status and latest strategic priorities. Short term tactical delivery-focused versions worked monthly with longer term versions focused on strategic approach to winning in the market.
  • The User Experience: Working closely with the Litera Design team to ensure the user experience is a first-class citizen in our product development efforts. While the Product Owner does not own the design direction in isolation but must be passionate about the end user experience and a champion working closely with Design from the discovery to sketch to iteration to delivery ensuring place in the roadmap.
  • The End-To-End: The Product Owner's job does not stop with shepherding the development of the product, on the contrary. The Product Owner needs to be passionate about knowing how the product is doing once in the hands of customers. Working closely with Customer Support teams to understand the feedback that is coming in from users and support the Support team when they have questions on how the product should work or tips/tricks. Must maintain a healthy customer experience loop.
  • Release Management: Representing the product team at internal change management meetings to obtain release approval, working with engineering to own release management responsibilities, ensuring release communications get to all who need to be informed both internal and external.

Role Progression

Within 1 month, you will:

  • Complete new hire onboarding, including eLearning courses, instructor-led training, and more.
  • Train on Litera’s core values and get an overview of our solutions.
  • Meet team members and review goals, initiatives, and specific objectives.
  • Meet with key stakeholders across the business.
  • Review and understand core market problems, value propositions, and features of the product.
  • Learn our current product roadmap.
  • Learn the product roadmap creation, development, and release processes.

Within 3 months, you will:

  • Contribute to our initiative and epic research and development process.
  • Participate in conversations about where product should be going, encouraging debate and critique.
  • Contribute to a product release by validating and testing assumptions.
  • Analyze your product’s past releases to identify focuses, compromises, and areas for improvement.
  • Evaluate new feature and enhancement requests.
  • Become an autonomous member of the product team and independently plan work to meet deadlines.

Within 6 months, you will:

  • Develop epics from first idea to validated story.
  • Serve as one of our product team’s subject matter experts for how users perform their jobs and feature requests for your product.
  • Innovate and advocate for new strategies and product direction.
  • Know why Litera is winning and losing in the market. Drive changes to the product that will create improvement.

About You

  • 2 + years’ experience as a product manager, product owner, or business analyst in agile
  • environments.
  • 2+ years’ experience with the Atlassian/Jira/Confluence suite and other project/program management tools.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or information Technology.
  • You have excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to take complex business requirements and translate them to a form that’s widely understandable.
  • Takes pleasure in collaborating with technical teams to provide technical solutions as well as external key users to identify unclear issues with workflows.
  • In a dynamic workplace, you must be able to collaborate effectively with multiple stakeholders who have different goals.
  • You can think through and recommend how small changes or requests can have strategic impacts across all levels of the business.
  • You are excellent organisational and time management abilities; keen analytical and problem-solving abilities; imaginative and visionary thinking; and attention to detail.
  • You ensure that there are always enough previously prepared user stories for the team to work on.
  • You plan and organize the product's feature backlog and development.
  • You specify the product's goal, plan, and expansion possibilities.
  • You need to evaluate value, create use cases, and rank stories, epics, and themes to make that development is concentrated on the most valuable aspects that are in line with product Assist teams in making team commitments for release and sprint planning procedures, scrum ceremonies, and sprint delivery.
  • You work together with the teams, keep track of sprint and release milestones, and assist in problem solving and risk mitigation.
  • You maintain a product backlog based on business value or ROI in close collaboration with product management.
  • You set expectations for the delivery of new functionality and take the lead in developing product release strategies.
  • You’re comfortable speaking with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders and able to seek out conversations and discussions yourself.
  • You are self-motivated with curiosity about how our customers work, and passionate about delivering great user experiences.
  • You’re comfortable balancing competing priorities while working with and solving problems for customers.
  • You collaborate with the customer service, sales, and development teams to serve as the customer's voice and to channel feedback, settle disputes, and promote consensus among these groups.
  • You create sales and training materials for new versions of products in collaboration with the customer service and marketing departments.
  • You take a proactive approach to removing obstacles that prevent the team from completing the Release/Sprint Goals.

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, or Washington residents is $59,000 to $130,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, Litera offers benefits such as a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
