Department: Business Office (Student Accounts)
General Statement of Job
The Student Accounts Accountant II position supports the financial operations of the Student Accounts Office. This role is responsible for performing a variety of accounting tasks, including daily financial transaction reviews, account reconciliations, monitoring delinquent accounts, collection efforts, and preparing financial reports. The position ensures compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations, contributing to the accuracy and integrity of student account financial records.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Performs accounting functions related to student accounts within the Student Account Office.
- Analyzes student account activity, collection reports, and daily clearing account transactions.
- Monitors changes in revenue streams (e.g., enrollment, tuition and fees) and implements appropriate procedures and internal controls.
- Assists with tuition and fee charge rules (tuition tables) and testing for each semester.
- Prepares journal entries, account reconciliations, and management reports.
- Assist with month-end and fiscal year-end closing activities.
- Cross-trains staff and serves as backup for various accounting roles as needed.
- Ensures compliance with college policies, state and federal regulations, and other applicable guidelines.
- Assists with audit preparation and documentation for internal and external audits, including financial statements, notes, and fraud surveys.
- Assists accounting assistants and accounting specialists with reconciliations.
- Provides customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
- Participates in testing and validation of 1098-T tax forms.
- Travels within the college district using personal, reliable transportation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field required.
- At least three (3) years of accounting experience required.
- Experience with a financial record systems preferred.
- Experience in a higher education institution preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of accounting principles and practices, including complex calculations across multiple funding sources, and the ability to prepare and present financial analysis of funds clearly and concisely.
- Proficient in the preparation of worksheets and data analysis using Excel.
- Familiarity with accounting functions and regulatory compliance.
- Proficient with ten keys by touch.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail within stated deadlines.
- Ability to adapt to constant change and periods of fast-paced, high-intensity work situations.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
- Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business publications, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure documentation.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
- Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Requirements
