Job Summary

The Sr. Engineer manages Amtrak’s Rolling Stock, Ballast Management Logistics and appropriation, Car Repairmen, and Car Inspectors  through out the NEC from Boston, MA to Washington, DC. This position also is responsible for the tracking, leasing and inventory of rolling stock, m/w equipment, roadway equipment and construction equipment system wide.

Essential Functions

•    Oversee the Safety Program to ensure compliance with all current rules and regulations. 
•    Understand mechanical operations of machinery.
•    Maintain and create asset inventory and accuracy through the Maximo system.
•    Maintain and create work equipment service and emergency mechanical bulletins.
•    Create Asset numbers in Maximo
•    Compute quantitative repair parts requirements for field support and define which are to be purchased later.
•    Compile, maintain designations of tools, parts, and components necessary for the efficient operation and repair of equipment systems.
•    Conduct studies to establish standardized maintenance procedures and repair operations.
•    Consider significance of failures regarding safety hazards, cost of repair, loss or down-time of equipment resulting from such deficiencies as lack of available parts.
•    Declare equipment/machinery that is no longer economically repairable as excess to the system and recommend disposal.
•    Recommend equipment modifications to facilitate railroad operations.
•    Provides technical equipment advice, recommendations and decisions on all maintenance and repair parts, assemblies, components, and subsystems.
•    Provide technical training and direction to both shop and outside vendors to ensure the safety of all.

Minimum Qualifications

•    Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
•    Plus 6 years of relevant work experience.
•    Experience working in the Railroad work equipment and or mechanical field 
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•    Demonstrated skills using PC-based spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel, Access), Microsoft Word, PowerPoint & Maximo.
•    Demonstrated supervisory experience.
•    Knowledge of Amtrak’s financial and tracking systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • Plus 8 years of relevant work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Highly proficient in the engineering process development, document control and diverse background in the various engineering work flows for railway infrastructure
  • Demonstrable track record of building processed based organizations and appropriate management systems (i.e. document control systems, engineering scheduling, etc.) from the ground up
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to build teams, lead technically and/or politically challenging projects
  • Expert ability to properly structure and resource projects and programs to ensure safe, effective execution
  • Proficient in collaboration, team building, and strategic alignment across all levels of both internal and external organizations and with track record of successful and diplomatic coordination across myriad stakeholders with competing objectives
  • Ability to partner with multiple stakeholders and project partners while ensuring Amtrak’s strategic interests are achieved and cost, schedule and scope outcomes are achieved
  • Expert level oral and written communication skills across all levels of internal and external stakeholder groups
  • Ability to organize and present executive level reports, proposals, and other related information
  • Broad-based management expertise and extensive exposure within Engineering and Process Improvements with strong experience specific to Rail Assets
  • Ability to create and oversee processes for managing, estimating, and scheduling engineering work as it relates to designs, standards conformance, and software and tools to manage these tasks effectively

The salary range is $103,700.00 – $134,460.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
