Summary of Position
Department: Programs
Supervised by: Oncology Nutrition Manager
Supervises: Interns and Volunteers as directed by Manager
Status: Hourly, Non-exempt
Hours: 20 hours per week including one to two evenings per week and one Saturday per month
Location: On-site at main location in Hinsdale and at partner locations
The Community Oncology Dietitian (COD) is an ambassador of the vision, mission, and guiding principles of Wellness House (WH) through participant engagement and delivery of innovative nutrition and education programs at the main location in Hinsdale, online, and at partner sites throughout Chicagoland. The COD is responsible for designing, tailoring, and facilitating innovative nutrition programs, including cooking classes, presentations, and individual consultations for people impacted by cancer of all ages and healthcare professionals. This position maintains required certifications and practices safety guidelines for participant paperwork/registration, facility/equipment maintenance, and emergency protocols. Additionally, the COD participates in program development and evaluation to support the continuous quality improvement of the WH programs across all locations and online.
RESPONSIBILITIES (100% Program Responsibilities)
Direct Service with Participants (Approximately 85%)
Participant Engagement
- Facilitate participant entry into WH programs through engagement, assessment, support, triage, introduction to programs, and referrals as needed.
- Follow up with participants at appropriate intervals to monitor progress, assess needs, schedule appointments, and provide resources and assistance.
- Provide service delivery through community program referrals and social service resources, in addition to WH resources.
- Provide coverage, assistance, and support at the front desk as needed.
- Assist with outreach and recruitment of new participants.
- Promptly complete appropriate documentation and enter attendance and participant efforts in the participant database, Mindbody Online (MBO).
Nutrition Program
- Create and facilitate nutrition and cooking classes as determined by supervisor for participants of all ages across all locations and online. Provide coverage for nutrition program staff absences as requested.
- Schedule and conduct individual nutrition consultations as requested by participants or referred by the Program Team, including participant triage, consult facilitation, MBO documentation, nutrition-related participant goal setting, and referrals to appropriate WH programs.
- Identify opportunities for new and innovative nutrition-focused programs.
- Collect, process, and update participant paperwork and files.
- Travel required through the Chicagoland area for program delivery.
Information & Education Programs and Program Special Events
- Create and facilitate educational presentations, workshops, and events at WH, partner locations, and online as assigned.
- Facilitate Welcome to Wellness House Orientation, Cancer Thriving and Surviving Programs, and survivorship programs as assigned.
Program Support (10%)
- As needed, recruit, interview, and recommend new volunteers, interns, and contractual staff.
- Assist with the supervision of daily work, training, and scheduling of department volunteers and interns, as requested
- Participate in program development and the evaluation of programs as requested.
- Ensure the kitchen is in good working order, including maintaining equipment, ensuring supplies are available, and adhering to infection control practices. Work with the Facility Team to schedule semi-annual kitchen cleaning and annual maintenance of kitchen appliances.
- Work with team to develop, support, implement, and champion diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to provide quality programs to diverse communities.
Other (5%)
- Promptly report to the Office Manager and supervisor any observations of malfunction or inadequacy of the WH facility that would compromise the safety of staff and participants or negatively impact the delivery of WH programs.
- Protect the organization's value by keeping information confidential.
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
- Perform general tasks and other duties as assigned.
Performance Measures:
- To be filled in each year during annual evaluation, by employee and supervisor.
Requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in a nutrition-related field required; Must be Registered and Licensed Dietitian eligible; Certified Specialists in Oncology (CSO) preferred.
Job Experience: Minimum of one year of applicable experience required; two or more years of applicable experience preferred. Prior experience delivering nutrition-related services such as nutritional programming or cooking classes. Experience working with a medical patient population, ideally with a cancer patient population preferred. Nonprofit experience is a plus.
Special Knowledge & Skills:
- Ability to develop and implement creative and innovative nutrition-based programming for people dealing with a cancer diagnosis.
- Comfort with public speaking and conducting cooking classes
- General computer skills, including knowledge and aptitude working with Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

Estimated hiring range: $31.10 to $34.60 per hour
Final offers are based upon qualifications, years of experience, and internal equity considerations and may or may not fall within the estimated hiring range.
