The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of safety and compliance related to DOT regulations. Dragon Xpress offers full benefits and a competitive compensation package. The Safety Manager position is based in Sturtevant, WI.
Position Overview
The Safety Manager is responsible for leading, developing, and maintaining the company’s safety and compliance programs to ensure full adherence with federal, state, and local regulations (DOT, FMCSA, OSHA). This role provides strategic direction on driver safety, compliance monitoring, accident prevention, and continuous improvement of fleet safety culture. The Safety Manager also supports daily operations, including close collaboration with dispatch, fleet management, and other departments to ensure smooth, safe, and efficient trucking operations.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance
- Oversee all compliance with DOT/FMCSA regulations including driver qualification files, hours of service (HOS), IFTA, drug & alcohol program, and vehicle inspections.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date safety and compliance records for audits and internal reporting.
- Conduct periodic internal compliance audits and prepare for external DOT audits.
Driver Recruiting & Onboarding
- Lead the recruiting and hiring of qualified drivers by partnering with HR, dispatch, and leadership.
- Oversee advertising, applicant screening, interviews, road tests, and background checks.
- Ensure new drivers meet all DOT/FMCSA requirements and company standards.
- Develop and deliver new hire orientation focusing on safety culture, policies, and procedures.
- Build a strong pipeline of qualified candidates through industry networking and referral programs.
Driver Safety & Training
- Develop and implement driver onboarding, orientation, and ongoing training programs (HOS, defensive driving, cargo securement, hazardous conditions, accident protocols).
- Conduct regular driver safety meetings and communicate updates on safety standards.
- Monitor driver performance through telematics (ELD, cameras, speed monitoring) and provide coaching.
Incident Management
- Lead investigation of accidents, incidents, near misses, and safety violations; document findings and implement corrective actions.
- Coordinate with insurance providers and legal as needed for claims management.
- Track accident trends and implement prevention strategies.
Fleet Safety Oversight
- Partner with maintenance team to ensure vehicles meet all safety and inspection standards.
- Monitor roadside inspections, citations, and CSA scores, and drive corrective action plans.
- Establish preventive programs to reduce violations and breakdowns.
Operations Support & Dispatch Collaboration
- Work closely with dispatch team to review driver schedules, HOS compliance, and load assignments to avoid violations.
- Provide real-time guidance to dispatch and drivers on safety-related issues and operational exceptions.
- Assist in managing driver availability, road conditions, and compliance checks to support daily load planning.
- Serve as a resource for dispatchers when addressing driver safety concerns, emergencies, or compliance flags.
Reporting & Analysis
- Develop, prepare and deliver regular reports on safety performance, accidents, incidents, CSA scores, and compliance metrics.
- Provide monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting to senior management with recommendations for improvement.
- Develop dashboards and KPI tracking for safety, compliance, and incident trends.
Other Duties
- Perform operations support tasks as assigned by management.
- Be willing and flexible to step in as needed based on operations needs.
- Participate in cross-functional projects, audits, and company initiatives.
- Contribute to continuous improvement across both safety and operations functions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Transportation Management, Logistics, Business, or related field (preferred).
- 3–5 years of experience in transportation safety management, fleet operations, or DOT compliance role.
- In-depth knowledge of FMCSA/DOT regulations, Hours of Service, CSA, and OSHA standards.
- Experience with safety technology: ELDs, dashcams, telematics platforms.
- Strong skills in investigation, training, reporting, and coaching.
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities.

Required Experience:
- 2+ years of safety, compliance, and DOT experience
- Knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, Drug & Alcohol Regulations and other Regulatory Guidance
- Knowledge and understanding of Electronic Logging Device (ELD) rules and regulations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong business acumen and analytical skills
- Experience using Microsoft Office – Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word
