Technical Writer

Position Overview:

Within the Tools & Outdoor Product Execution Group of Stanley Black & Decker we are currently looking for a Technical Writer to join our team in Towson, MD. This is a Hybrid position, where the employee works Remotely 90% of the time, but 10% needed in the office for Product Knowledge sessions. Our team is focused on creating Instruction Manuals for power tools, outdoor products, and home products. Our products sell under the DEWALT, Craftsman, Stanley, and Black & Decker brands, just to name a few. As a Technical Writer with Stanley Black & Decker you’ll have an opportunity to work with a global team of talented writers, designers, engineers, and product managers. You will support our ongoing efforts to deliver products that help people to build and repair the world we live in.

The Technical Writer will be responsible for supporting the development of instruction manuals with an understanding of time management and a sensitivity to priorities while delivering informative and easy-to-use manuals.

Candidates should have familiarity with Technical Writing concepts, practices, and methodologies. With guidance, you’ll write and maintain documentation for simple or moderately complex products.

Specific duties may include:

· Working with Technical Writing team members and with product-related staff to understand existing product functionality and documentation requirements.

· Taking complex technical information and simplifying it for customers with nontechnical backgrounds.

Ideal candidates should have strong organizational, planning, and project management skills and can prioritize tasks to meet business deadlines; have excellent written and communication skills, including the ability to present ideas and problem-solving suggestions effectively; and must be keenly detail oriented.

Major Responsibilities:

· Develop and edit content for product instruction manuals and obtain translations supporting a global market.

· Study comments given in edited manuals for updating existing content.

· Learn SBD-specific uses of Adobe InDesign features to format global manuals including Parent Pages, Paragraph and Character styles, placing ICMLs, using scripts for placing languages, etc.

· Learn SBD-specific and brand-specific formatting of manuals.

· With guidance, begin to learn project management software.

· Be accountable for maintaining a high level of quality and accuracy on all work performed.

· Manage and maintain clear and accurate records of work performed within a project management system, Workfront.

Position Requirements:

· Minimum 4-year degree in writing or graphic design, or related field of study.

· Layout, editing, and proofing experience, having a keen sense of detail.

· Demonstrate clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.

· Must be flexible and be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

· Self-motivated/self-starter with a positive attitude, able to work with a team, and able to work independently.

· Advanced Adobe InDesign experience.

· Familiar with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).

· Must have strong time management skills with the ability to multi-task and problem solve.

· Coding for InDesign scripts a plus.
