POSITION SUMMARY:
The NCH Emergency Preparedness Coordinator also serves as our EMS Liaison and is responsible for developing, implementing, and coordinating emergency management and disaster preparedness programs across the healthcare system. This role ensures readiness for natural disasters, mass casualty incidents, pandemics, and other hazards. The liaison also serves as the primary point of contact between the hospital system and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), public safety agencies, and regional/state emergency management partners. Must be available 24/7 to consult on Emergency Management and Incident Command issues.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Emergency Management, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or related field required.
Licensure:
- Current healthcare license (RN, EMT-P, or equivalent) desirable.
- Association* accredited course in Basic Life Support (BLS) (for clinical staff), or Heartsaver CPR AED (for nonclinical staff), and renewal on a regular basis, with up to a three-month grace period after the expiration date.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of emergency management principles and hospital operations.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and interagency collaboration skills.
- Ability to lead under pressure and during high-stress events.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and incident management software systems.
Work Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years in emergency management, hospital operations, EMS coordination, or related healthcare leadership role.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develop, implement, and maintain system-wide emergency management and disaster response plans in compliance with The Joint Commission, CMS, and other regulatory requirements.
- Conduct hazard vulnerability analyses (HVAs) and risk assessments to identify system risks and mitigation strategies.
- Coordinate hospital system response during emergencies, serving in the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) structure as needed.
- Lead and evaluate emergency drills, tabletop exercises, and full-scale simulations.
- Develop after-action reports and corrective action plans to improve readiness.
- Provide education, training, and resources to hospital leadership and staff on emergency preparedness procedures.
- Serve as the primary liaison between the hospital system and EMS providers, fire departments, law enforcement, and emergency management agencies.
- Facilitate coordination of patient flow during mass casualty incidents, surge events, and large-scale community emergencies.
- Support pre-hospital to hospital communication pathways, ensuring seamless handoff and continuity of care.
- Participate in regional emergency preparedness coalitions, committees, and EMS councils.
- Monitor and improve EMS turnaround times, transfer processes, and patient safety practices.
- Ensure compliance with state, federal, and accreditation requirements related to emergency preparedness and EMS coordination.
- Prepare reports, maintain documentation, and present updates to executive leadership.
- Manage emergency supplies, equipment, and system readiness initiatives.
- Support grant applications and funding opportunities related to preparedness and response.
