JOB SUMMARY

Works under the direction of the Battalion Chief and is responsible for supervising firefighters in shift operations as a company officer. Protects lives and property through activities associated with fire prevention, rescue, firefighting, hazardous materials and emergency medical incidents. Participates in training and maintenance activities, as necessary. Firefighters have regular demands for high physical exertion, lifting, dragging, and carrying heavy equipment and/or people.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Includes, but not limited to) 

Fire Suppression & Rescue

  • Responds to fire alarms, structure and wildland fires, motor vehicle collisions, medical emergencies, water emergencies, emergency rescues, and other emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Drives emergency vehicles and operates emergency equipment associated with EMS, firefighting, rescue, salvage and maintenance.
  • Enters burning buildings and hazardous environments for extinguishment and/or rescue.
  • Applies appropriate extinguishing agents to fires.
  • Protects property from unnecessary smoke and water damage during salvage and overhaul operations.
  • Provides BLS/ALS emergency medical care to patients and assists the local emergency medical services transport provider.

Supervisory

  • Supervises firefighters on emergency and non-emergency operations.
  • Plans and oversees firefighter training instruction.
  • Performs firefighter performance evaluations.
  • Attends and participates in meetings with other supervisors and chief officers.
  • Oversees the safety of other public safety members and the public at all times while on duty.
  • Responsible for fire stations, apparatus, and equipment upkeep, as well as reporting needed repairs.
  • Prepares monthly reports to evaluate performance of training hours, hydrant maintenance, pre-fire plans and other fire company activities.
  • Completes detailed records of all medical and fire incidents in the records management system.
  • Maintains proper inventory of all medical supplies and fire equipment.
  • Supervises daily training sessions to keep firefighters current on all fire and medical procedures.
  • Ensures completion of station maintenance, including vacuuming, cleaning and scrubbing all areas of the building. Ensures the building is ready for public inspection at all times.
  • Prepares and provides tours, lectures, and video presentations. 

General

  • Effectively communicates by means of two-way radio, person-to-person, and in writing through various records, reports, memos and letters.
  • Performs in-service training and public education activities.
  • Inspects buildings for fire hazards and completes pre-fire plans.
  • Maintains apparatus, equipment, buildings and grounds.
  • Participates in all phases of training necessary to maintain the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the position.
  • Assists in maintaining records and submitting reports.
  • Serves as Acting Battalion Chief when so designated.

Additional

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • May be expected to perform additional duties in an emergency.

ESSENTIAL EXPECTATIONS OF PERFORMANCE AND BEHAVIOR (Includes, but not limited to)

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Includes, but not limited to)

  • AS/AA degree from an accredited college or university. (Fire or EMS related degree preferred.) Must obtain degree within twelve months from appointment into the position.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of career fire service experience; applicants with two (2) + years’ experience within the Villages Fire Department preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years as a certified paramedic.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must successfully complete initial medical and physical evaluations and recertify annually in accordance with F.A.C. 69A-62 and NFPA 1582 standard.
  • Employees may not exhibit any visible body art.
  • Must maintain all required certifications and licenses (including the Medical Director’s clearance) to perform Basic and/or Advanced Life Support patient care.
  • This position is subject to recall or emergency response outside of regularly scheduled hours.
  • Florida State Fire Standards (per F.S. 633).
  • Florida State certified as Paramedic.
  • State Certification Pump Operator
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Current ACLS, ITLS, & PALS certification.
  • EVOC certification – 16 hours.
  • State of Florida Fire Officer I.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
  • Required FEMA (ICS) certifications must be completed within six months of hire.
  • All candidates and employees must successfully pass background and drug screening.

Internal Applicants: Will not be eligible for consideration if:

  • They are currently in or did not successfully complete and probation.
  • They have received any formal discipline in the previous 12 months. 

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Includes, but not limited to)

Knowledge

Proven intermediate or better proficiency in computer operations and use of software packages, including but not limited to:

  • Word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc., specifically with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook,and PowerPoint.
  • Records Management Systems (RMS).

Skills

Ability to successfully, and within required timeframes asnecessary:

  • Comfortably and effectively communicate with all levels of District employees, residents,community organizations, agency representatives, and consultants by phone, in person, or through correspondence.
  • Apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.
  • Capable of operating in personal protective equipment (PPE) and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) per state and federal safety standards.

Abilities

Ability to successfully, and within required timeframes asnecessary:

  • Read and interpret documents such as technical data, safety rules, operating andmaintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Develop, proof and present materials and programs, reports andcorrespondence.
  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or scheduleform.
  • Function independently in a multi-task environment, as well as part of ateam.
  • To multi-task in a fast-paced environment to meet multipledeadlines.
  • Possess strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Successfully demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as a professional appearance and demeanor. 

EQUIPMENT

  • Fire-rescue apparatus, equipment and tools; Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, hydraulic rescue tools, advanced medical care equipment, computers, and general office equipment.
