Job Summary:

The City of Greeley Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is seeking a motivated and service-oriented Intern to support a variety of projects and initiatives that enhance public safety, preparedness, and community resilience. As an intern, you will report directly to the Director of Emergency Management and may also receive assignments from other emergency management team members.

 

The position is for approximately 20-25 hours per week during normal working hours (8a-5p, Monday through Friday). There may be limited opportunities for work outside of standard hours depending on your availability and organizational needs. This is a paid internship designed for an upper classman status student currently enrolled in a four-year college/university program.

 

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Currently enrolled in a four-year college/University [HK1] [PP2] in Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Public Administration, Public Health or a closely related field. 

  • Basic typing and computer skills required.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Sharepoint etc.).

  • Must be able to successfully pass pre-employment drug screening, Motor Vehicle Record check, and a background check.

Preferred

  • Interest in public safety, government operations, or community resilience

  • Ability to speak and write in multiple languages is highly valued, especially Spanish

  • Basic understanding of emergency management principles (FEMA IS-100/IS-700 completion is a plus)
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative on projects
  • Research and data compilation skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow through on assignments
  • Comfort interacting with staff at all levels and members of the public
  • GIS or mapping knowledge is a bonus but not require

  • Computer skills, including the ability to utilize Microsoft Office programs (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Sharepoint, etc.) and learn and experiment with new software and systems.

  • Proofreading, grammar, punctuation, and formatting skills, including the ability maintain consistency and be cognizant of and address details.

  • Ability to navigate multiple on-line platforms.

  • Ability to present oneself professionally in appearance, demeanor, and effort.

  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and stay on task when completing special projects and daily assignments.

  • Ability to maintain a strong work ethic, positive problem-solving attitude, and enthusiasm for the work performed.

  • Ability to self-start and take initiative in completing daily tasks and special projects.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and reliable professional judgment, as well as collaboratively with a team to achieve desired results

Essential Functions:

  • Assist with updating and maintaining emergency plans, procedures, and resource documents

  • Support the planning, coordination, and execution of emergency management trainings and exercises

  • Conduct research on best practices, hazard risks, and emergency response strategies

  • Assist with public education and outreach efforts, including creating social media content or printed materials

  • Help maintain databases, contact lists, and other preparedness tools

  • Attend internal and external meetings; take notes and provide summaries as needed

  • Assist with post-incident documentation and improvement planning

  • Provide general project support as assigned by the Director or other OEM staff

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • No supervisory responsibilities 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed in a variety of settings, including a standard office environment, public presentation venues, and a warehouse-style storage area located in fire apparatus bays.

  • The position involves interaction with diverse members of the public during community preparedness events.

  • The role may require occasional travel to off-site locations within the jurisdiction for public outreach or resource transport.

  • Work hours may occasionally extend beyond standard business hours, including evenings or weekends, to support emergency preparedness events or response activities.

  • Must be able to frequently remain in a stationary position, as well as move about inside the office and fire bay areas.

  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to set up and break down materials for public presentations, including tables, banners, and display boards.

  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, reaching, or crouching may be required while handling inventory or preparing materials.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in person and over the phone, including projecting voice in group settings.

Travel:

  • 10% local.
