POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Volunteer Services provides leadership and operational oversight for the Volunteer Services Department. This role is responsible for developing strategic initiatives to create a positive volunteer experience, achieve key performance objectives, and increase the number of volunteers year over year. The Director of Volunteer Services provides leaderships and strategic direction for all volunteer related programs, tracking and related functions in addition to the Student Heros and Community Service programs

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Develops and implements strategic initiatives to foster a positive volunteer experience and increase the number of volunteers.
  2. Partners in analysis, development, and implementation of a strategic approach to recruiting and scheduling volunteers to meet the needs of the organization, including dedicated volunteer groups (i.e., Apple Core and Student Heroes).
  3. Fosters relationships within the community to ensure the effectiveness of the Blue Badge Community Service program.
  4. Actively engages in the development of procedures and processes to enhance volunteer experience and ensures compliance with internal processes through regular monitoring.
  5. Cultivates relationships with prospective volunteer groups and individual volunteers by welcoming volunteer groups, providing information about the organization, and conducting tours as appropriate.
  6. Audits and ensures the accurate maintenance of the volunteer schedule calendar and its distribution to appropriate individuals and departments.
  7. Facilitates and organizes department and cross-functional meetings as appropriate to ensure alignment and information sharing. 
  8. Partners closely with warehouse management to ensure the most effective placement of volunteers, food supplies, and equipment.
  9. Ensures organized documentation and reports on all safety-related incidents and participates in compliance or investigation-related activities as needed.
  10. Responsible for leading, supporting, and executing disaster response support and COOP plans during disasters and recovery efforts.
  11. Leads, coordinates, supports, and actively participates in off-site events supporting the community.    
  12. Participates in the development of and manages departmental budget, authorizes expenditures, and ensures efficient use of resources.
  13. Collects, analyzes, and reports on relevant volunteer metrics as appropriate.  
  14. Responds to internal and external inquiries related to volunteer services and their impact and/or programs on interested individuals and groups.
  15. Responsible for volunteer services training materials.
  16. Represents HFB at key community meetings and participates in regional volunteer administrator organizations.
  17. Identifies and cultivates volunteers who demonstrate an interest and ability in serving the organization through other means (i.e., gift giving, board service, etc.) and reports these individuals to the Development team when appropriate.
  18. Develops and implements an appreciation program for volunteers. 
  19. Partners with Human Resources in relation to the management of staff as appropriate.
  20. Fosters a positive and collaborative team culture that encourages continuous learning and improvement.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages two (2) or more direct reports by providing guidance and/or oversight to employees and/or contractors. Develops and maintains roles, responsibilities, and expectations. Practices performance management in support of employee development and perform administrative duties associated with being a people manager. Responsibilities include interviewing, planning, assigning, directing work, and resolving problems. Responsibilities also include sponsoring and participating in and/or supporting project teams sponsored by other management team members.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Business, Social Work, Communications, or a closely related field 
  • 7+ years of relevant experience
  • 5+ years of prior senior management experience, including strategic, budget, and planning experience, and leading mid-level managers
  • 3+ years of Project Management experience and Customer Service experience
  • Experience working with large groups and working collaboratively across the organization
  • Event planning experience is strongly preferred but not required

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and insurance.

COMPLIANCE:

Carries out responsibilities in accordance with HFB policies. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including health and safety regulations, food safety standards, AIB, and Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), USDA, and FDA requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required daily to analyze and interpret data, communicate, and remain in a standing or stationary position for a significant amount of the workday, and often access, input, and retrieve information from the computer and other office productivity devices. The employee must regularly move about the office and around the facility, use hands, wrists, and fingers to grip, type, and write. The employee must frequently lift 40 pounds. The employee will need to have the average ability to hear horns, warnings, and alerts associated with a warehouse. The employee will occasionally travel to other sites for business.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While the job is generally performed in an enclosed office environment, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, strong food-related smells, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the office environment is typically quiet, but the employee will be occasionally exposed to loud noise levels (e.g., horns, fans).

TRAVEL REQUIRED:

Travel is required for this position (up to 20% of the time and on a domestic basis within our 18-county service area). 


This role supports hours of operations at the Houston Food Bank facilities, as necessary, and may require flexibility (e.g., times of disaster, community events, company events).
