The Museum Specialist (Loan Program Coordinator) will join the Curatorial Services team in Forestville, MD. The Museum Specialist will provide professional support for the archival and museum loan program, ensuring accurate documentation, artifact care, and collections management consistent with industry standards. This position requires significant expertise in museum collections, technical proficiency with museum software, and strong collaboration skills to support the ongoing development of a federal Museum.

Requirements

  • Assist the Curator with loan program execution and maintenance/reconciliation of loan files.
  •  Ensure consistent application of industry standards when handling museum unit artifacts and objects.
  •  Draft object labels for displays and exhibits presented to internal and external audiences.
  •  Conduct and document provenance research for museum objects and prospective accessions.
  •  Perform and document routine internal inventory checks and scheduled artifact assessments.
  •  Support curatorial staff in managing timelines and deliverables, ensuring projects are completed on schedule.
  •  Collaborate with museum staff to support events and institutional development goals.
  •  Operate standard museum storage equipment, including work assist vehicles, pallet jacks, and sculpture lifts.
  •  Lift and transport boxes and artifacts weighing up to 40 pounds.
  •  Stay current on developments in museum collections software, care techniques, and professional best practices.
  •  Utilize museum collections management software (PastPerfect and/or Proficio) for accurate data entry and tracking.
  •  Use Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel) to support curatorial operations and reporting.
  •  Experience supporting federal museum programs or military heritage collections.
  •  Familiarity with heritage asset management in compliance with federal guidelines.
  •  Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with attention to detail.
  •  Experience collaborating with curators and museum stakeholders on exhibitions and outreach initiatives.
  •  Knowledge of current trends and best practices in object care, storage, and museum technology.

 Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds, push/pull carts, stand and bend for extended periods, handle delicate materials with precision, and work at a computer for long durations
