POSITION SUMMARY: The Academic Specialist in Practical Nursing provides unique services to PN students to increase program success in high attrition courses. Must gather and analyze statistics of student attendance and success in classes for accreditation. Provide an exceptional customer service experience to both internal and external customers throughout every interaction.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Other duties may be assigned)
(100%) Academic Support
• Support student learning through individualized and group academic sessions for any nursing student taking high risk for failure nursing classes. Nursing students who fail an exam and/or are repeat students are required to see the Academic Specialist for mandatory academic coaching.
• Provide individualized academic support for all students which includes development of learning communities (study group facilitation and skill practice group facilitation), referral to Lakeshore Student Services staff, mandatory meetings with students who fail first exams of the semester or multiple exams within a semester, walk-in hours for academic support, episodic tutoring, other to be defined.
• Intrusive advising and supplemental instruction in the nursing program courses as needed.
• Review specific course curriculum and adapt strategies and update teaching methods.
• Work effectively in a team-based environment.
• Facilitate optimal learning through integration of technology and utilization of appropriate delivery methods.
• Evaluate student learning based on course competencies employing formative and summative strategies.
• Communicate regularly with students and update faculty on student participation.
• Collaborate and communicate with nursing faculty to identify students at risk, attendance issues, and any other challenges to student success.
• Maintain communication with students at risk to provide effective and consistent support throughout the course.
• Develop and maintain regularly scheduled meetings that are posted on the Blackboard platform as well as college wide email and postings.
• Create test preparation tools to reinforce class/textbook information.
• Ensure proper and timely documentation of all student interactions.
• Identifies students at risk, student attendance and grades through consistent and regular data tracking platforms and develops interventions to address identified challenges to course success and persistence.
• Apply and deliver alternative methods of teaching including but not limited to computer conferencing as required.
• Attending student appeals as required to enhance communication and collaboration within the nursing program.
• Participate in professional development to maintain an understanding of current ideas, practices and to enrich personal growth, knowledge and skill in student learning and persistence.
• Maintain professional appearance for position and serves as a role model to students.
• Analyze success rates of course completion and summarize data each semester and report to the program.
• Summarize and records statistics for PN ACEN accreditation.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Master’s degree in nursing OR a BSN and enrolled in, and actively pursuing, completion of an MSN required.
• Three to five years of recent related occupational experience required.
• Two years’ teaching experience preferred, preferably in nursing.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURE, REGISTRATION
• Must meet requirements of appropriate accrediting agencies, have or be able to obtain Wisconsin Nursing licensure, and be certified by the Wisconsin State Board of Nursing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.
• The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
• The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Work environment may require multi-tasking.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
