Job Responsibilities
The Facilities Management Services department is looking for a Groundskeeper I to maintain and enhance the aesthetic beauty of the RIT campus landscape and hardscape under the direction of the Grounds Supervisor.
The Groundskeeper I is considered essential personnel. This means that this person must be willing to work a flexible schedule including call-in work that could encompass various shifts, weekends, holidays, Institute emergencies, and times other than normal work schedules.
- Lawn and Athletic Field Care
- Independently performs grounds maintenance activities including cultivating, planting, watering, aerating, weeding, mulching, trimming, grubbing, removing thatch, trimming/edging, mowing and/or pruning. Cares for lawn, gardens, shrubs, flowers, flower beds, trees and walkways.
- Independently responsible for determining the appropriate size and size of plants. Analyzes environmental conditions (weather trends, soil conditions, plant conditions) and determine courses of action to maintain plant health efficiently using available resources.
- Determines appropriate amounts of fertilizers and apply in accordance with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (NYSDEC) regulations to be used.
- Assists in determining irrigation rates and times to operate irrigation systems for proper plant health and efficient use of water. Install and maintain irrigation systems as needed.
- Winter Snow Removal
- Independently performs removal of snow and ice from assigned areas such as roads, walkways, parking lots, and stairs using hand and power snow removal equipment.
- Coordinates and/or performs snow removal on artificial and turf fields using techniques to prevent damage to fields, surfaces, and their bases.
- Spreads salt, sand, and deicers to prevent slipping.
- General Grounds Upkeep and Support
- Independently removes litter from grounds by emptying trash containers; sweeping doorways, steps, and fire exits; removing signage, posters, and graffiti, removing and properly disposing of dead animals, bodily fluids, etc.
- Provide proper upkeep of hard surface areas including, sidewalks, concrete pavers, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, or other outdoor structures and amenities.
- Provide support for special events throughout campus. Deliver signage, grills, and barricades.
- Equipment
- Independently operates hand and power equipment such as mowers, tillers, sweepers, snow blowers, edgers, shovels, and small vehicles.
- Operates heavy equipment such as snow plows and tractors.
- Performs routine assembly, cleaning and maintenance of equipment as needed. Handles complex assembly, cleaning, and maintenance as appropriate.
- Leadership/Supervision
- Supervise, trains, or organizes work for student employees.
- Assists in mentoring and training Groundskeeper III and II staff on proper lawn and athletic field care, snow removal, equipment use, and general grounds upkeep techniques and best practices
- Specialization
- Provides specialized grounds activities such as serving as an athletic field specialist, arborist, horticulturalist, etc
- May determine appropriate amounts of pesticides and apply in accordance with the University’s integrated pest management program and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (NYSDEC) regulations. Maintain pesticide application records per NYSDEC regulations.
- Leads special projects as needed.
- Responds, assesses, and manages non-routine situations as presented by Public Safety and FMS leadership.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Three years’ experience working in groundskeeping, construction, maintenance, facilities, or other outdoor setting.
- The individual hired for this position will be required to have a pre-employment Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check. Please refer to RIT's Vehicle and Driver Safety Procedures for details regarding what is considered in an MVR review.
- Ability to safety and efficiently operate vehicles and powered equipment necessary for grounds activities.
- Ability to select and use appropriate PPE equipment for tasks performed and conditions encountered.
- Ability to and willingness to be self-motivating and willing to perform manual labor
- Ability to withstand irregular and long hours during winter weather conditions
- Ability to tolerate prolonged exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, unpleasant odors and loud noises.
- Ability to perform physical activities such as standing or walking for long periods, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, crawling, and climbing ladders or scaffolding.
- Ability to serve as a steward for all university property, equipment, and tools.
- Ability to effectively listen, speak, write, and interact in a tactful and logical manner. Continually reinforce FMS' commitment to conduct at all times that is courteous, friendly, helpful and cooperative to students, staff, co-workers, and visitors.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Computer skills in using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and, Excel), computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), Project Tracker, and Oracle applications.
- Ability to work in a thorough and safe manner for self and be aware of the safety of others in group projects (tree trimming and removal).
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification, professional license, or credential: NYSDEC Commercial Pesticide Applicator License
- Experience in commercial or university campus setting
- Experience with expansive grounds facilities and landscape

Job Summary
The Groundskeeper I is part of the FMS Grounds team that is responsible for maintaining the exterior campus environment. This includes the campus' 1300 acres of land, 32 miles of roads and walks and 48 acres of parking lots.
