We are a journey of continuous growth – now looking for our next star – a passionate Mechanical Engineering Supervisor. This position reports to the Director of Engineering and will work in the Pompano Beach, FL facility.

As Mechanical Engineering Supervisor of the Pompano Beach team, you will be responsible for a small team of engineers designing, developing and improving a wide variety of climate control products for the Marine industry – specifically the mechanical and thermodynamic components for these systems – ensuring expected performance & seamless integration of the components into the systems and the systems into the customer environment to meet or exceed customer expectations.

This role will focus support for one or more of the following product groups:  Self-Contained Systems (direct expansion heat pumps with integrated condensing & evaporator units), Split Systems (direct expansion heat pumps with separate condensing & evaporator units), Chilled Water (heat pumps with a secondary chilled water loop for cabin conditioning) Systems, & Custom Refrigeration/Ice-making equipment.

General Responsibilities

  • Product & Leadership Focus
    • Product Design – Mechanical & systems hardware design, development & improvement
    • Systems Integration – Effectively integrating mechanical & electronic components into functional systems and those systems into customer applications
    • Team leadership – Organize & manage engineering resources to achieve design & development tasks outlined below
    • Project Management – supporting coordination of resources (PD & CFT) to achieve successful implementation of tasks per established Project milestones and goals
  • Design & Development Tasks
    • Own technical portion of the full development cycle, from concept (requirements analysis, feasibility studies, prototype design & design verification, etc.), through launch (design release, industrialization, product validation, SOP, etc.), as well as post-launch product improvement activities
    • Prepare product design & documentation for new & existing components & assemblies, including: Specifications, schematics, drawings, component selection, sizing, & layout, & performance optimization of aforementioned products in accordance with Dometic / ISO9001 requirements / procedures
    • Oversee validation tests, including performance, reliability (e.g. HALT/HASS), & industry / regulatory (safety) compliance testing – creating all required test plans, and writing / reviewing / approving reports as appropriate
    • Provide mentoring and coaching for less experienced engineers, particularly those that are direct reports
  • Cross-Functional Team (CFT) Activities
    • Provide guidance for the cross-functional product development team, leading and/or supporting the CFT for key technical tasks (e.g. design reviews, BOM management, cost modeling, make/buy analyses, DFMA studies, DFMEA, DVP&R, & development schedules and project reports)
    • Effectively coordinate & interact with offsite resources – e.g software development team, test labs, etc. – to ensure continuance of the product development process
    • Represent Dometic Marine in customer and supplier interactions, including troubleshooting, problem solving, line audits, trade shows, presentations, etc.
    • Support manufacturing, quality, technical service teams with respect to issue resolution, quality and warranty improvement

SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate for this role will bring demonstrated success in a warehouse/manufacturing environment. Additionally, they will have acquired the following qualifications and experiences:

  • Appropriate qualifications (University, Technical Institute, Training, etc.) in Mechanical, Mechatronics or related Engineering discipline.
  •  10+ years of industry or relevant product design experience, 2 or more of which should be in a senior engineering position or supervisory role is strongly recommended
  •  Extensive use of effective engineering tools & techniques (PDCA, APQP, DFSS, System V, DFMEA, DVP&R, DFMA, CAD modeling, GD&T, simulation tools (e.g. CFD, FEA, 1D modeling), ERP systems (BOM creation & management), etc. is strongly recommended
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office programs (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint and PM tools (MS Project, JIRA / Confluence, etc.) and the ability to learn other applications quickly
  •  A/C / HVACR product development experience, ideally related to automotive, boating and/or transportation industry is preferred
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, including relevant industry functional & safety standards (e.g. SAE, ASTM, ABYC, ASHRAE, ISO, NMEA, UL, CE, etc.) preferred
  • Familiarity with relevant electrical systems, including controls & basic electrical wiring design is preferred (to ease interface with electrical / electronics engineers & provide basic support to the manufacturing team)
  • Familiarity with relevant manufacturing processes and fabrication capabilities, preferably with ability to audit and improve such processes
  • Understanding of hardware/software interface issues particularly relating to the control of mechanical hardware systems including basic knowledge of communication / programming protocols & systems to assist interface with Electrical / Electronics Design Engineers
  • Familiarity with HVAC test equipment – System & component calorimeters, psychrometric rooms, shaker tables, anechoic rooms for NVH testing, etc.
