Who You Are:
We are seeking a highly skilled Transcoding/Encoding Engineer – Tester to join our team at a leading cable operator. In this role, you will be responsible for validating, testing, and optimizing video delivery workflows that power millions of customer viewing experiences. You’ll focus on ensuring the quality, performance, and reliability of our encoding, transcoding, and content delivery systems across multiple platforms, devices, and distribution networks.
As a Consultant, you’ll contribute to client engagements by delivering insights, building deliverables, and leading workstreams. You’ll be expected to bring strong analytical thinking, and a proactive mindset to solve client problems and drive transformation.
Role and Responsibilities:
You may work on various projects throughout your career with Excelacom. The roles and responsibilities noted below pertain to the specific role listed above.
Test & Validation: Design and execute test plans for video encoding, transcoding, and packaging workflows, ensuring compatibility across STBs, mobile apps, and OTT devices.
Ad Tech & VAST: Validate ad insertion workflows including VAST (Video Ad Serving Template) compliance, dynamic ad insertion (DAI), and ad tracking accuracy.
Encoding/Transcoding Systems: Evaluate video/audio quality (VQ/AQ), codec implementations (H.264, H.265/HEVC, AV1), ABR ladder optimizations, and file-based/live encoding workflows.
CDN Testing & Monitoring: Test and troubleshoot video delivery over major CDNs such as Fastly, Akamai, and operator-managed caches, ensuring low latency and high QoS.
Automation & Tools: Develop automated test scripts, monitoring dashboards, and regression frameworks for continuous validation of video workflows.
Performance Analysis: Conduct bitrate analysis, stream profiling, and QoE measurement to identify optimizations and prevent playback issues.
Cross-Team Collaboration: Work with video engineering, ad tech, operations, and vendor partners to ensure seamless integration and end-to-end reliability.
Issue Resolution: Investigate playback failures, ad misfires, or CDN anomalies, document defects, and work with vendors to resolve issues.
Work closely with clients to identify process improvements
Analyze business challenges and recommend technology-driven solutions
Support system development, integration, and testing activities
Develop presentations, deliverables, and implementation plans
Assist with proposals and business development efforts
Required Qualifications:
3–5+ years of experience in video encoding, transcoding, or content delivery engineering/testing
Hands-on experience with VAST, SSAI/DAI ad insertion, and ad compliance testing
Strong knowledge of encoding/transcoding systems (Elemental, Harmonic, Ateme, ffmpeg, etc.)
Familiarity with CDNs such as Fastly, Akamai, or Cloudflare, including caching, edge delivery, and CDN logs
Proficiency in scripting (Python, Bash, or similar) for automation
Experience with stream validation tools (e.g., Wireshark, FFprobe, Telestream, IneoQuest/VeEX)
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science or related field
Prior consulting experience – in an agile environment – with a leading strategy firm, consulting practice, or consulting technology firm
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio)
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior transcoding/encoding video experience at a cable operator, MVPD, or OTT video service provider
Exposure to monitoring/observability platforms (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, Conviva, Youbora)
Familiarity with DRM technologies (Widevine, PlayReady, FairPlay)
Knowledge of SMPTE standards and CableLabs specifications
Prior experience in Telecommunications, Media, or Cable is highly preferred
Past success in generating new business with existing clients
Good time management and collaboration skills
Compensation and Benefits:
Excelacom offers competitive salaries, health and wellness benefits, 401(k), paid time off, and career growth opportunities. For regular full-time employees, the estimated salary range is from $90,000 to $115,000/yr.
