HR Generalist

Prime Materials Recovery is currently seeking an HR Generalist to fill a newly created position in our Corporate office.  The HR Generalist will report to the Corporate HR Director and will provide hands-on support in employee relations, recruitment, onboarding, compliance, training coordination, backup payroll and benefits administration. This role serves as a key resource for employees and managers, ensuring that HR practices are consistent with company policies and regulatory requirements.

PMR is one of the largest non-ferrous metal merchants, polymer, and processors in the United States.  Headquartered in East Hartford, CT, PMR operates state of the art processing facilities in Canastota, NY, South Windsor, CT, and Orangeburg, SC. 

Responsibilities and Duties: 

Employee Relations & Compliance

· Act as a point of contact for employee questions regarding HR policies, benefits, and workplace practices.

· Support supervisors and managers in handling employee relations issues with guidance from the Corporate HR Director.

· Ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws, including FMLA, ADA, wage and hour, OSHA, and Connecticut-specific regulations.

· Maintain confidentiality of sensitive employee information and uphold ethical HR standards.

Recruitment & Onboarding

· Assist with posting job openings, screening applicants, scheduling interviews, and coordinating the hiring process.

· Prepare offer letters and support pre-employment requirements (background checks, drug testing, etc.).

· Conduct new hire orientation and ensure smooth onboarding for hourly and salaried employees.

HR Operations

· Administer HR records, including personnel files, HRIS data, and compliance documentation.

· Support benefit enrollment processes, employee changes, and open enrollment activities.

· Assist with payroll-related inquiries in collaboration with corporate payroll/finance.

Track leave requests and support FMLA/LOA administration.

Training & Development

· Coordinate training sessions, safety programs, and employee development activities.

· Maintain training records and assist with compliance-related training (OSHA, harassment prevention, etc.).

· Support Corporate HR in rolling out company-wide initiatives, engagement surveys, and recognition programs.

Requirements

  

Qualifications

Education & Experience

· Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred but equivalent work experience will be considered.

· 5-10 years of progressive HR experience, preferably in manufacturing, recycling, or industrial environments.

· Solid knowledge of HR practices and federal/state employment laws.

· Experience supporting both hourly and salaried workforces.

· SHRM-CP, PHR, or other HR certification preferred but not required.

Skills & Competencies

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build trust at all levels.

· Must be able to work independently under pressure in a team oriented, ever-changing manufacturing environment

· Well-organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

· Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word).and HRIS systems. 

· Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.

Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus.
