Summary:

Drives the ambulette vehicle or serves as the patient attendant for non-emergent hospice patient transport. Assist patients with entering and exiting the vehicle utilizing safe patient handling techniques, body mechanics, and equipment. Includes cross training to the HIU Home Health Aide duties for staff that are certified HHAs to assist the HHA staff between patient transports. Ambulette staff with EMT background will assist DME or Facilities team staff during ambulette downtime.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Adheres to all HPCB policies and procedures as it relates to the ambulette.

Maintains proficiency in the use of ambulette equipment.

Demonstrates effective communication skills when interacting with staff in all departments.

Receives and coordinates patient transport requests, responding to requests in accordance with established guidelines.

Provides timely updates to the Charge RN on duty to confirm patient arrival at planned destination as well as communication on any issues encountered during transport.

Documents observations on the ambulette transport form, immediately reporting to the Charge RN on duty any patient concerns noted during transport or upon arrival to pick up location.

Assists patients with entering and exiting the vehicle utilizing appropriate techniques and equipment.

Maintains cleanliness and maintenance of the vehicle according to DOT and DOH guidelines in collaboration with the facilities team.

Demonstrates the ability to communicate with patients and families in a supportive manner that is understandable and culturally appropriate.

Demonstrates appropriate Infection Control, hand hygiene, waste disposal, use of personal protective equipment, bag (supply/tote) technique, and knowledge of standard precautions.

HHA certified ambulette staff will assist the HIU HHA team during transport downtime.

EMT certified ambulette staff will assist the DME Department for pickup and delivery of DME equipment and supplies during transport downtime.


Qualifications:

Education/Certification

High School Diploma or GED.

Completion of a NYSHD approved Home Health Care training with Home Health Aide Certification or EMT certification.

Valid Driver's license, free of serious violations, required.


Experience

EMT experience preferred.

Hospice experience helpful.

Physical Demands:

Walks and stands for most of the working day. Position also requires sitting, standing, bending and reaching along with a normal range of hearing and vision. Must be able to negotiate stairs, walkways, driveways, and other environmental objects while out on appointments, in patient homes, or visiting facilities. May be subject to wet/slippery floors.

Requires manual dexterity sufficient to provide hands-on care to the patient. Must be able to lift and maneuver a minimum of 25lbs. Must be free of communicable diseases.

Must be able to operate standard office equipment such as computer, mobile device, phone, copier, scanner, printer, or related items.


Environmental Conditions:

May be called upon to work beyond the normal workday. May experience eye and repetitive motion strain from work on computer. Hazards include risk of exposure to communicable disease, hazardous substances, and risk of physical injury from lifting patients. Exposure to variable conditions in patient homes. Must have good personal hygiene and adhere to corporate dress policy.
