The Prince George’s County Office of Central Services is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill an Assistant Garage Supervisor (Assistant Garage Supervisor-A), grade A21, in the Fleet Management Division.


About the Position

This is a skilled and technicial supervisory work assisting a Garage Supervisor in directing and coordinating the work of skilled employees engaged in the services, preventive maintenance, and repair of a variety of light to heavy motorized equipment, vehicles, or fire and rescue apparatus.  This will be an evening shift position, where work is performed with a considerable degree of independent judgment under the general supervision of a Garage Supervisor and is evaluated in terms of work production, timelines, and adherence to established policies and procedures.

The Office of Central Services is a multifaceted agency of the Prince George’s County Government providing government-wide, mission critical support services in the areas of facilities operations and management, building design & construction, real estate services, fleet management, and general services.  We make government operations operate better for the government.

Position Duties


  • Participates in the development of accurate and flexible vehicle preventive maintenance schedules assuring a smooth, efficient work, procedure that maximizes employee productivity, quality of service, and minimizes vehicle out of service time.

  • Assists in the management of the operation of an automotive maintenance facility; planning and developing schedules for vehicles preventive maintenance and coordinating the repair for automobiles, light trucks, buses, ambulances, and related equipment.

  • Supervises all garage employees; receives customers, inputs vehicle and maintenance data into the fleet management information system, handles telephone calls and dispatches tow trucks for road service calls.  Provides customer service to include resolution of problems and receiving feedback.

  • Assist in overseeing and monitoring the procurement, inventory, issuance and expediting of necessary vehicle parts and equipment.

  • Instructs and evaluates Equipment Mechanics and other garage staff on the latest methods, procedures and equipment used in vehicle maintenance and repair and recommends training programs to keep the garage staff current with the latest vehicle innovations and repair techniques.

  • Reviews and submits necessary information to the County Purchase Card Coordinator.

  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s class for work.



Minimum Qualifications


  • Must have high school diploma/GED 
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the mechanical field, servicing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on a wide variety of light, medium and heavy motorized equipment, vehicles or rescue and fire apparatus, to include at least two (2) years of supervisory experience
An equivalent combination of training, education or experiences may be accepted

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Possess an Automotive Service Excellence Master certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint)

Conditions of Employment:  Upon selection, the candidate must:

  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and Department of Transportation Medical Certification Card.
  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
  • Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable.
  • Be willing to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
  • Working Environment:  The incumbent typically works in offices but may travel to different garage locations within Prince George’s County.  Working outside and inside; excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness or chilling; dry atmospheric conditions; excessive notes; intermittent dust, silica, asbestos, etc. fumes, smoke or gases; solvents (degreasing agents); grease and oils; working around machinery with moving parts; working around moving objects or vehicles; working on adders or scaffolding, explosives; vibrations; working with others and/or protracted or irregular hours.
