The Managing Director of Strategic Initiatives and Project Management serves as a critical architect of the organization’s future—turning vision into measurable impact. As a senior leader, this role is entrusted with advancing GMHC’s most important strategic priorities, overseeing complex, high-stakes initiatives, and driving operational excellence across all departments. The Managing Director will lead cross-functional teams, foster organizational alignment, and implement best-in-class practices in strategic planning, organizational development, and project execution. Through this leadership, the role will play a central part in fulfilling GMHC’s mission to improve the lives of people affected by and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, ensuring both immediate results and sustainable progress.


Essential Job Functions

The following duties are mandatory requirements of the job.


Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Planning

  • Partner with the CFO and senior leadership to develop, implement, and monitor the organization’s multi-year strategic plan.
  • Translate strategic goals into actionable initiatives, KPIs, and performance metrics.
  • Identify emerging trends in HIV/AIDS services and public health to inform program innovation and organizational growth.
  • Collaborate with department heads to align operational goals with strategic objectives.
  • Lead annual organizational planning processes, ensuring alignment with the mission and      funding priorities.

Project Management

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of high-priority projects across departments.
  • Develop and maintain project management frameworks, tools, and best practices.
  • Lead cross-functional project teams, ensuring effective collaboration, timelines, and resource allocation.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and report progress to internal and external stakeholders.

Organizational Development & Innovation

  • Champion initiatives that improve operational efficiency, client services, and community engagement.
  • Lead change management efforts to support organizational transformation and culture.
  • Collaborate with program and development teams to assess new funding opportunities and strategic partnerships.

Team Leadership & Supervision

  • Manage a team of project managers, interns, and/or support staff, providing mentorship, supervision, and professional development.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, equity, and innovation.

External Relations & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent the organization in strategic partnerships, community coalitions, and with funders or government agencies.
  • Communicate key strategic initiatives to stakeholders, board members, and partners.

Other Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Advanced Technical Proficiency: Expertise in Microsoft Office Professional Suite and other productivity platforms to support data-driven decision-making and efficient communication.

  • Strategic Execution: Ability to translate vision into actionable plans, delivering measurable outcomes that advance both programmatic and operational priorities.
  • Influential Communication: Exceptional skills in facilitation, negotiation, and relationship management across diverse stakeholders, including board members, funders, government partners, and community leaders.
  • Project Management Excellence: Strong command of project management tools and methodologies to ensure initiatives are completed on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational mission.


Education and Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Public Health, Business Administration, Public Administration, Nonprofit Management, or a related field strongly preferred.
  • 8–10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in strategic planning, program or organizational development, and/or large-scale project management, with at least 3 years in a senior executive or department head role within a mission-driven or nonprofit organization.
  • Demonstrated success in leading cross-sector initiatives, managing diverse stakeholder relationships, and driving measurable impact in alignment with an organization’s mission and values.


Technical Skills

Microsoft Office Suite - Intermediate to advanced proficiency in the following suite applications: 

  • Word: Skilled in document creation, formatting, and collaborative editing.
  • Excel: Proficient in data entry, spreadsheet management, use of formulas, pivot tables, and creating visual data representations.
  • PowerPoint: Experienced in designing clear, engaging presentations tailored to varied audiences.
  • Outlook: Efficient in managing email communications, scheduling meetings, and coordinating calendars.


Project Management Software

  • Proficient in using project management tools such as Asana, Trello, or comparable platforms to track progress, assign tasks, manage timelines, and collaborate across teams.


Digital Communication & Collaboration Tools

  • Comfortable using platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Office 365 for virtual meetings, collaborative work, and executive communications.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic tech issues and coordinate logistics for hybrid and remote meetings involving senior stakeholders.


Work Environment & Schedule

This is a hybrid role that requires both in-office and remote work, as outlined by the supervising manager. Schedule flexibility is essential, including:

  • The role requires a regular presence in-office, with remote work as determined by the CFO’s schedule and business needs.
  • The role may require extended hours or availability outside of standard business times to support executive functions and urgent priorities.
  • Mandatory participation in the annual AIDS Walk New York event and other agency-wide initiatives as required.


Physical Demands

While carrying out the responsibilities of this role:

  • This position primarily involves sedentary work, including extended periods of sitting, video conferencing, and computer use.
  • Must be able to navigate a standard office environment and participate in occasional in-person meetings or events.
  • Requires sustained attention and mental concentration to analyze information, solve problems, and manage concurrent projects under tight deadlines.
