Proofreader/Document Specialist (Asia)

Position summary: The Proofreader/Document Specialist is  responsible for assisting the Firm with all proofreading needs by. providing support to the various practice groups and other departments in all Firmwide offices with their proofreading needs. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Position responsibilities:

  • Proofread complex legal documents for proper firm style, consistency, spelling, syntax, punctuation and grammar using proper citation protocols, in English
  • Perform word-for-word reading of converted documents against originals to ensure accurate conversions
  • Perform cross-reference checks and defined term checks
  • Check corrected proofs against mark-up to ensure all corrections were made accurately
  • Check formatting for consistency and adherence to requester specifications
  • Review edits and placement of changes/new language per requesters instructions
  • Advise requester of any conflicting issues regarding language usage and formatting
  • Use standard proofreading marks
  • Manually or electronically perform blacklines and/or redlines to show document changes, as requested; run redlines and compares utilizing Litera Compare, Track Changes and Native Word
  • Review and revise the finished documents provided by clients or external translators to achieve the highest quality focusing on the authenticity, clarity and linguistic elegance of final products
  • Support secretarial, administration, and human resources departments with translation of documents, including but not limited to government application documents, invoices, engagements, and lease contracts
  • All other duties as assigned or required

Skills & experience:

Required:

  • After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applications
  • Available to work overtime, as required
  • 3+ years of direct applicable experience in a similar role (e.g., thorough knowledge of document comparison software, including Microsoft Word Track Changes)
  • Knowledge of currently used legal writing styles and citation protocols
  • Proficient in various proofreading functions

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in English or Legal English
  • Fluent in spoken English; proficient in written Simplified and Traditional Chinese
  • Previous related experience in a law firm

  • Critical thinking skills; exceptional attention to detail
  • Familiarity with legal terminology and a variety of document formats used in legal work
