The Role

What You Will Do

  • Design, build and scale machine learning solutions using remote sensing technology and geospatial data, by collaborating closely with our science and engineering team.
  • Design and implement experiments to validate model performance, ensuring high-quality outputs and to assess the accuracy and uncertainty of the models.
  • Discuss experiment plans and results with scientists to align technological advancements with scientific goals.
  • Applying causal inference and Bayesian methods to real-world problems, to measure the impact of carbon project intervention.
  • Engage in pair programming and code reviews with other team members and engineering team to foster the culture of collaboration and innovation.
  • Stay abreast of the latest innovations in scientific literature and commercial applications, integrating them into our projects.
  • Mentoring and coaching ML Engineers & Scientists on best-practice software engineering, to increase efficiency, accuracy, and reliability.

What you bring to the role

  • A love of nature. We are a mission-driven company with a strong affinity for conserving and restoring natural systems. To make hard things happen, our team must put mission over ego. You find purpose not only in personal growth but also in stopping climate change and biodiversity collapse.
  • Strong Machine Learning and Statistical expertise. Experience and background in Python programming, using deep learning frameworks like PyTorch and TorchGeo. Open source geospatial tools including Rasterio, Geopandas, and Xarrays.
  • Strong understanding of causal inference theories and methods: Experience with techniques such as propensity score matching, instrumental variables, difference-in-differences and regression discontinuity.
  • Proficiency in Bayesian statistics, Including Bayesian inference, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Experience with Bayesian hierarchical models and Bayesian networks. Practical experience with software and tools for Bayesian analysis (e.g., Stan, PyMC3, JAGS).
  • Experience working with optical imagery and radar data: Landsat, Sentinel 1 and 2, and high-resolution imagery (e.g. Planet, Maxar etc.), SAR.
  • Expertise working with could computing platforms: Including Google Cloud Platforms, Amazon Web Services.
  • MLOps expertise: Experience with building and or using model management tools (e.g. mlflow) & MLOps (model orchestration, updating, etc.)
