Department: Educational Technologies

General Statement of Job

The Technician I - Educational Technologies Operations provides Tier I technical support (basic) and training for instructional tools, software, and digital platforms to support the educational needs of faculty, staff, and students. Will test and provide feedback on new instructional and classroom technology to enhance and expand the educational technology resources available to faculty, staff, and students. 

Essential Functions:

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with providing training and informational sessions on instructional tools, software, and digital platforms for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Provide Tier I technical support for instructional tools, software, and digital platforms purchased and maintained by Educational Technologies.
  • Create, maintain, and ensure accurate records of technical support and resolutions provided.
  • Create and maintain training resources and communications for instructional tools, software, and digital platforms provided to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Escalates technical issues and limitations of instructional tools, software, and digital platforms as observed during client interaction and technical support to Tier II technical support.
  • Assists with testing emerging classroom and instructional technologies and assists in evaluating their potential integration into institutional instruction.
  • Travel throughout the district to assist with providing training and in-service presentations as needed.
  • Collaborates with all Educational Technologies teams to provide high-quality audio-visual services across institutional campuses and external sites.
  • Assists with maintaining, supporting, and configuring digital signage players and software to ensure continuous system functionality.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on all types of instructional technology equipment.
  • Create supportive environments that enhance communication by using a range of technological tools to help people communicate effectively in different settings.
  • Collaborate with other departments throughout STC Campuses for issue resolution (eg. IT, Networking Department, Electricians, etc…)
  • Assists with providing support for online web-conferencing tools and virtual events.
  • Assists in production of special events.
  • Ensures the safe storage and integrity of data.
  • Ensures the safe transfer and shipment of equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate's Degree, or a minimum of 60 earned college hours.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in technical or customer support, public speaking, training delivery, and audio-visual technology within a similar work environment, preferred.

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to write emails intended for promotion and information to be sent to faculty, staff, and students at South Texas College.  
    • Ability to effectively present technical information and respond to questions from various audiences.
    • Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
    • Familiarity with the operation, maintenance, and installation of audiovisual equipment including fundamentals of light and sound; concepts of microphones, loudspeakers, basic networking, cameras and displays; signal types and signal flow; and networking for data and AV, RF, digital and analog signals.
    • Strong customer service orientation, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
    • Content creative with a high attention in detail.
    • Familiarity with digital imaging and video editing software.
    • Ability to work independently as well as a team player within the department and with others.
    • Ability to adapt to constant change and periods of fast-paced, high-intensity work situations.
    • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; required to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
    • Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
    • Ability to apply practical understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

    Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

    • All applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.

    Physical Requirements

    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
    • Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

    • Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
    • Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
    • Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
    • Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
    • Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
    • Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
    • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
    • Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
    • Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
    • Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
    • Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
    • Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
    • Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
    • Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
    • Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
    • Standing particularly for sustained periods of time.
    • Bending the body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
    • Shouting to be heard above ambient noise level.
    • Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and/or extensive reading, including color, depth perception, and field vision.
    • Visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
    • Visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
    • Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as visual inspection involving minor defects, small parts, operation of machines, using measurement devices, and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
    • Mobility to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
