Job Summary

Battelle is currently seeking a proactive and client-focused Client Service Manager – Environmental Testing Lab to lead customer engagement and service delivery in our Environmental Testing Laboratory. This is an on-site position located in Norwell, MA

This role is responsible for managing client relationships, ensuring exceptional service delivery, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to produce accurate and timely analytical results. The Client Service Manager also oversees Quality Control processes to maintain regulatory compliance and data integrity while supporting continuous improvement initiatives. A key focus of this role includes driving contract growth within existing client projects, standardizing project management practices, and developing a comprehensive Client Excellence Plan to enhance overall service performance and client retention.

Responsibilities

  • Defines program requirements that identify all elements of cost, schedule, and technical performance. Examines teaming options and completes teaming agreements. Identifies and plans for system management requirements and controls relative to the project. Leads development and refinement of the program Work Breakdown Structure to a level sufficient to identify all work required for project completion. Directs estimation of project costs.
  • Manages cost, schedule, and performance. Implements project change management and control processes. Establishes performance metrics to ensure successful completion of the project. Exercises control of project variances through root cause analysis and corrective actions using tools such as Earned Value Management. Assesses the impacts of scope, schedule, and budget change requests and takes appropriate action. Ensures projects remain within approved scope, budget, and schedule baselines, updating baselines as needed for client-approved changes. Often manages or coordinates activities of third parties, both internal and external to Battelle, to achieve project success.
  • Proactively communicates with clients to ensure engagement, clarification of requirements, and regular assessment of progress. Builds and maintains client relationships to sustain and expand business opportunities. Influences client direction, stays informed of their business plans and priorities, and aligns Battelle’s resources with client needs. Identifies high-value growth opportunities and develops capture plans across Battelle to position the organization for follow-on programs. Provides sales and proposal support to the Business Development function.
  • Collaborates with Business Development staff to establish proposal strategies and themes that clearly differentiate Battelle from competitors. Coordinates the selection of proposal team members (strategic partners, subcontractors, universities, divisions, etc.) and directs the team to develop offerings that meet client needs and demonstrate the value of Battelle’s approach at a competitive price.
  • Supports contract negotiation activities and maintains a strong working knowledge of contractual issues related to scope, schedule, and subcontract management.

Additional Responsibilities

•    Prepares and delivers presentations to internal management and external clients to provide updates on technical aspects, cost, and schedule.
•    Integrates safety policies and regulations into project planning. Leads early identification, analysis, and mitigation of hazards. Directs the development and implementation of safety measures and workplace practices to minimize injuries and promote a healthy work environment.
•    Stays abreast of Project Management best practices and applies Battelle processes, policies, and Quality Systems. Ensures compliance with applicable government and industry regulations.
•    Develops and implements a Client Excellence Plan to enhance satisfaction, retention, and service quality.
•    Proactively engages with existing and prospective clients through regular communication and professional networking to strengthen relationships, identify new opportunities, and promote expanded service offerings.
•    Supervises the Quality Control team to ensure adherence to QA/QC protocols and regulatory standards.
•    Creates and implements optimized workflows that improve quality, reduce cycle times, and streamline the quality control review process.
•    Reviews reports and records for technical accuracy, data integrity, and compliance with applicable regulations, protocols, and SOPs.
•    Works closely with technical staff and management to resolve issues and coordinate error corrections.
•    Assists study directors in responding to Quality Assurance Unit audit findings.
•    Monitors, analyzes, and reports on operational key performance indicators (KPIs); leverages data insights to identify improvement opportunities and lead initiatives that drive continuous process optimization.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field preferred. An equivalent combination of laboratory operations and customer service may be considered.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in customer service, project management, or laboratory operations.
  • Strong understanding of PFAS testing methodologies and environmental regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and client relationships simultaneously.
  • Demonstrates capacity to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams, fostering a culture of accountability, excellence, and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

•    Experience with LIMS and other laboratory data management systems.
•    Minimum 5 years of experience in customer service, project management, or laboratory operations. 
•    Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, including Excel (pivot tables, data visualization, formulas), Word, Outlook, and Teams, with demonstrated experience in generating and analyzing operational KPIs to support data-driven decision-making and performance tracking.
•    Experience working with government or commercial clients on environmental testing projects.
•    PMP or similar project management certification.
