Job Summary:
Lead and oversee the preparation of accurate and timely project and job cost estimates across all business lines. Manage the estimating team and process to ensure consistency, accuracy, and alignment with company standards. The Estimating Manager will coordinate with Sales, Engineering, Projects, and Fabrication teams to develop detailed and competitive cost estimates based on scope documents, drawings, technical specifications, and client RFQs.
Essential Functions:
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the estimating department, including workload allocation, scheduling, and quality control.
- Review and interpret complex technical drawings, specifications, and RFQs to ensure precise and complete cost estimates.
- Oversee and approve work scope estimates prepared by estimators and ensure compliance with company standards and client requirements.
- Identify labor, material, subcontractor, and time requirements for projects, ensuring all cost elements are fully captured and validated.
- Develop and maintain estimating tools, templates, and databases to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Lead collaboration between Sales, Project Management, Engineering, and Fabrication to confirm technical accuracy and project feasibility.
- Establish and maintain vendor and subcontractor relationships to secure competitive pricing and reliable lead times.
- Conduct and facilitate bid review meetings with senior management to present final estimates and clarify cost assumptions.
- Perform quantity takeoffs and high-level cost analysis for strategic or complex projects when necessary.
- Provide guidance, mentoring, and professional development for estimators and junior staff.
- Evaluate historical project performance data to identify estimating trends, cost variances, and areas for continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with leadership to develop estimating strategies, margin guidelines, and process improvements that align with company goals.
- Prepare departmental performance reports and assist in annual budgeting and forecasting activities.
- Conduct occasional site visits to validate work scope, gather field data, and improve project understanding.
- Adhere to and enforce company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Perform additional duties or special projects as assigned.
Physical Skill and Effort:
Work requires computer proficiency, advanced Excel skills, attention to detail, and analytical capability. Work involves minimal physical exertion but requires high mental concentration and data accuracy.
Working Conditions and Hazards:
Normal office environment with travel to job sites or client facilities. Minimal exposure to hazardous materials or conditions.
Education:
A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related technical field is preferred. Equivalent industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
Experience:
- Minimum of seven years of industrial or technical estimating experience, including two or more years in a supervisory or lead estimator role.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) required.
- Familiarity with HVAC, mechanical, or industrial systems strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to manage multiple estimates simultaneously and lead a team in a deadline-driven environment.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and analytical skills.
