Job Summary
As the Scale Operator/ Customer Service Representative (CSR) at Lyons Salt Company, you will provide customer service duties for the markets serviced by the Lyons, KS facility and general support to the area sales manager. This critical role works closely with customers, salespersons, and vendors to maintain an effective supply chain management process and helps to ensure the shipping function runs efficiently by checking truck drivers in/out, answering phones, and providing customer service that is second to none.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Receive customer orders, input orders into the system, and work with the handler/carrier to ensure that the order is fulfilled correctly and timely
- Obtain/update customer set up information and work with credit manager to establish approved level of credit on account
- Receive, respond to, and resolve all customer inquiries
- Check trucks in upon arrival at Lyons, KS facility ensuring proper order confirmation number and necessary check-in documents
- Dispatch trucks to the proper loading point or stage trucks appropriately for efficient loading
- After loading and prior to exit from facility, check trucks out by weighing trucks, entering weights into order entry system, verifying trucks received correct product(s), and printing bill of ladings
- Work with customers, salespersons, and vendors to maintain an effective supply chain management process
- Proof & email customer invoices (daily) and customer statements (monthly)
- Prepare samples of products produced at the Lyons, KS facility and distribute to customers (or potential customers) per area salesperson requests
- Ensure adequate supply of product samples on hand for periodic trade shows
- Ensure area salesperson(s) have sufficient product sample supply on hand
- knowledgeable of product lines, prices, available carriers, lead times, and similar data, as required
- Comply with established month end procedures and reports
- Other administrative/clerical duties as assigned
Qualifications & Requirements
- High School diploma, general education degree (GED) or equivalent required
- Associate degree in business related field or equivalent experience preferred
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in office or call center setting
- Proven ability to work effectively as a team member in an office setting required
- Three (3) years’ experience in a high volume, Customer Service related position preferred
- Previous experience in an industry related field such as: chemical, minerals, distribution, salt, etc. preferred
- Previous experience in facilitating sales through an inside sales function is preferred
- In depth understanding of customer service and general administrative principles and practices
- Highly proficient level of computer skills with Microsoft Office applications is required (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook)
- Previous experience with order entry software and/or inventory management system(s)
- Ability to operate simple office equipment sufficiently to perform job (i.e. computer, email, copier, fax)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required – both written and verbal
- Must have excellent organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and complete multiple tasks

- Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Must have strong record keeping and follow through skills; including detail, accuracy and thoroughness
- Must be able to stand/walk for extended periods of time
- Capable of working independently with limited supervision
- Demonstrated ability to make decisions and resolve problems
- Ideal candidate should be honest, assertive and systematic
- Should be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Regular attendance within defined schedule is required
