The Opportunity with McKinstry

We are adding a Director, Fabrication Shop Network to our growing New Construction Mechanical WW division in Seattle, WA. In this role, you will develop strategies, goals, and objectives for our Network of Fabrication Shops to ensure delivery of fabricated products safely, on time and on budget with high customer satisfaction. This includes ensuring proactive and long-term planning for the Network of Shops infrastructure to meet the growing demand for fabricated products across the entire McKinstry Enterprise. Additional responsibilities may include:

Business Management

  • Responsible for meeting revenue goals and achieving planned bookings.

  • Partner with Network of Shops BUM to develop and execute strategic and tactical business plans.

  • Maintain production forecast models.

  • Participate in monitoring and managing key business metrics.

  • Report identified potential business risk elements and design and implement mitigation efforts.

  • Develop and communicate key business metrics.

  • Build and maintain relationships with industry leaders, associations, and organizations.

  • Partner with Network of Shops BUM to define and execute multi-year capital expenditure plans aligned with business growth, operational efficiency, and innovation goals.

  • Evaluate potential investments using ROI, NPV, and payback period models. Assess financial and operational risks before committing capital.

  • Lead the evaluation and implementation of advanced manufacturing technologies (e.g., robotics, IoT, AI) to enhance productivity.

 

Department Leadership

  • Exercise global decision-making by considering other departments within the company such as project management, engineering, sales, estimating, detailing, accounting, purchasing, etc.

  • Manage department planning and decision-making.

  • Partner with Shop leaders to oversee daily manufacturing operations, ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency standards are met.

  • Implement Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to streamline operations and reduce waste.

  • Work closely with business leaders in construction, technology, and OSM for alignment in strategic roadmaps and initiatives.

  • Continuously analyze production workflows to identify bottlenecks and implement throughput improvements.

  • Champion quality assurance through root cause analysis and corrective action processes to drive zero-defect culture.

  • Oversee PNW Shops maintenance program, to include staffing and technical requirements to administer the program

 

Team Management

  • Project staffing requirements and oversees project team requirements. Recruit, develop and retain high-performing employees.

  • Train, mentor and manage first-level people supervisors and managers in effective tactics to attain team goals.

  • Create performance plans, assess performance and provide performance feedback.

  • Communicate company and department goals, policies, plans, and priorities formally and informally.

  • Act as a steward of McKinstry culture; communicates and influences policies and procedures.

  • Read and demonstrate understanding of each craft's collective bargaining agreement(s).

  • Establish and lead associated meetings.

  • Define individual responsibilities and accountabilities. Ensure clear understanding across the shop team (both union and staff).

Other duties as assigned.

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Engineering or equivalent work experience required.

  • Ten (10) years of relevant project management, engineering, or construction experience, 5 years of shop or manufacturing leadership experience, or equivalent experience is required.

  • Experience in working with union workforce preferred.

  • Proficient with scheduling software: Microsoft Project, Primavera and/or Suretrak required.

  • Completed OSHA 30 class is required (can be completed after starting role)

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook required.

  • Intermediate estimating skills required.

  • Proficient with construction financial programs and software preferred.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of accounting and financial management preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Field/shop/warehouse environment

    • Some remote work

    • Climbing, standing, and/or stooping

    • Some travel (such as to job sites, shop facilities, clients, etc.)

    • On-call (as regular part of job)

    • Physical effort/lifting

      • Up to 50 pounds

The pay range for this position is $140,300 – $211,900 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. Base pay information is based on market location.
