Overview:The Designer IV serves as a senior technical resource and lead designer for complex land development projects. This role is responsible for the advanced design phases of projects that include site development, grading, utilities, on-site and municipal wastewater systems, stormwater management, roadway design, flood studies/mitigation, and state and local permitting. The Designer IV provides expert guidance, quality assurance, and mentorship to project teams while driving innovative solutions that meet client goals and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities:Leadership and Direction
- Operate with a high level of independence, exercising expert judgment and discretion on complex technical matters.
- Serve as a senior technical lead/resource for project teams, providing advanced design expertise, guidance, and mentorship to Designers, CAD technicians, and junior engineers.
- Support project managers by providing input on staff development, workflow planning, and quality standards.
- Lead peer reviews, QA/QC checks, and provide feedback to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
At the Operational and Company Level
- Collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, and multidisciplinary teams to develop and refine design strategies.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with regulatory agencies, clients, and external partners to facilitate approvals and resolve design issues.
- Contribute to business development by supporting proposal preparation, client presentations, and pursuit of new opportunities.
- Champion company best practices and serve as a subject-matter expert in civil/site design and permitting.
Do the Work
- Lead the preparation of complex design documents using AutoCAD and Civil 3D, ensuring accuracy and constructability.
- Oversee preparation of advanced drawings, design calculations, material specifications, and production packages.
- Independently develop, review, and approve construction documents, permit applications, technical specifications, and cost opinions.
- Analyze and resolve challenging or conflicting design inputs by applying advanced engineering concepts and creative problem-solving.
- Provide project scheduling and budgeting input; track progress to ensure timely delivery and financial performance.
- Serve as a key reviewer for submittals and final deliverables to ensure adherence to quality standards.

- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, architecture, or a related discipline strongly preferred.
- Ten or more (10+) years of progressive design experience in the land/site development industry, including demonstrated leadership in complex projects.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D design software.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Demonstrated experience preparing and managing permit applications, construction documents, and QA/QC reviews.
- Primarily indoor professional office environment, which can consist of possible bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.
- Mobility around an office environment.
- Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
- Occasional lifting or carrying up to 40 pounds.
- Occasional pushing or pulling up to 40 pounds.
- Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
