We are seeking a strategic and results-driven Director of Accounts Receivable to lead our AR function, with a strong focus on Collections and Payment Application. This role is critical to ensuring the firm maintains healthy cash flow and minimizes aged receivables. The ideal candidate will be a confident communicator, capable of navigating complex conversations with Partners, and will bring deep expertise in AR processes within a professional services environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead and manage a team of Collections and Payment Application professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee all aspects of Collections and Payment Application, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
  • Develop and implement strategies to reduce DSO (Days Sales Outstanding) and improve collection rates.
  • Serve as a key liaison between the AR team and Firm Partners, handling sensitive and challenging conversations with professionalism and tact.
  • Monitor AR metrics (DSO, aging, collections performance reports) to enhance reporting, automation and systems
  • Escalate clients identified as potential bad debt or risk to management in a timely manner to enable proactive action or decision on whether to financially close the matters.
  • Monitor unallocated funds to ensure timely research, allocation or refund of client payments
  • Ensure compliance with firm policies and industry regulations, including internal controls, segregation of duties, and timely response to requests for client audits.
  • Utilize ARCS to manage workflows, reporting, and performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with other Finance Directors and across teams to align AR strategies with broader revenue goals.
  • Provide regular reporting and insights to senior leadership on AR performance and trends.
  • Drive process improvements and automation initiatives to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Ensure that all processes are thoroughly documented to support training and knowledge transfer
  • Establish monthly collections targets for the Collections team and other metrics that track productivity and accuracy for cash application.
  • Work with Human Resources staff to recruit, interview, select, hire, and employ employee(s). Manage department staff which includes performance management, interviewing/selection of new staff, developing and coaching always encouraging growth and motivating positive environment.
  • Stay abreast of technological advancements in the Accounts Receivables space and leverage AI to boost productivity, wherever applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS (EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES):

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, required; MBA or CPA preferred. A combination of education and experience and will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Experience:

  • 8+ years of experience in Accounts Receivable, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Prior experience in a law firm or professional services environment strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Proficiency in ARCS and 3E strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to manage high-stakes conversations with senior stakeholders.
  • Proven track record of leading high-performing teams and driving measurable improvements in AR metrics.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage people and motivate them to accomplish their goals.
  • Ability to identify and implement creative solutions to enhance productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness of operations, systems and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience using related accounting computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Outstanding accounting, analytical, mathematical and problem-solving skills. Strong attention to detail; high level of accuracy a must.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This job operates in a clerical, office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sedentary work: Exertion of physical strength to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects up to 10 pounds. Work involves sitting most of the time.  Walking and standing are often necessary in carrying out job duties.

VISUAL ACUITY

Worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as:  preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
