Job Statement
Provides technical expertise and guidance in the Engineering Department. Handles complex assignments, mentors junior staff, and ensures compliance with system specifications. Evaluates new products, recommends improvements, and acts as a subject matter expert in the field. Work will be performed with minimal oversight in an engineering lead capacity. This position provides mentoring for less experienced engineers while completing comprehensive natural gas design assignments. Duties will be dependent upon departmental workload and may include any or all the duties described below. This position may supervise Intern employees.
Essential Duties
- Offers technical guidance to department staff. Reviews documents for accuracy and applicability. May supervise and/or direct the project work of consultants and/or contractors. Mentor less experienced engineers in all facets of natural gas design.
- Prepares feasibility studies, prepares preliminary design reports, cost estimates, and makes forecasts of system requirements based on growth trends and modeling data.
- Reviews plans and specifications to ensure that they are technically complete and developed within policies, procedures, industry standard, and applicable codes.
- Performs constructability reviews to verify that project can be constructed and maintained as designed. Makes recommendations to correct any constructability or maintenance deficiencies identified.
- Reviews construction shop drawings to verify that proposed materials meet project specifications. Perform periodic field visits to verify that approved materials are being used and installed correctly according to project plans and specifications.
- Consults with other departments regarding projects and processes to ensure that project impacts and required resources are addressed.
- Stays abreast of current and proposed industry standards and codes. Maintains and updates HU standards and specifications to ensure that they are in compliance with current industry standards and codes. Practical knowledge of USDOT and ALPSC compliance requirements, including cathodic protection of pipelines and services desired.

- Prepares and reviews project budgets, scopes, and justifications.
- Performs advanced engineering functions in the design and operation of natural gas distribution and transmission facilities. Resolves complex customer and technical issues beyond the scope of less experienced staff.
- Practical knowledge of gas pipeline, gate station, and regulator equipment design, operation, and maintenance desired.
- Maintains relationships with City, County, and State entities. Coordinates with other departments to address project impacts and resource needs.
- Responds to emergency call-outs as required. Participates in managing large restoration efforts as needed.
- Promotes and enforces compliance with all safety practices and policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education/Certifications/Training: B.S. degree from an ABET accredited school in Civil or Mechanical Engineering required and current AL Professional Engineering License or the ability to successfully obtain licensure by comity within six months of hire.
Experience/Skills: A minimum of ten (10) years of practical experience is required and meets all requirements for Engineer II. Progressive experience of design, construction standards, and codes for natural gas distribution and transmission systems, previous engineering and construction experience, knowledge of materials and equipment used in operating and maintaining the gas systems, and experience with gas system model planning. Fluids modeling experience with GasWorks, or equivalent, gas modeling software experience desired. Experience with integrated business, design, mapping systems required.
