Position Title: Staff Accountant 


Accountability: Staff Accountant reports to the Chief of Staff  


Job Classification: Full-time, salary, exempt – benefits eligible


About: Daniel Stowe Conservancy (Stowe) inspires a love of nature and its beauty through unforgettable outdoor experiences. The nearly 400 acres of Stowe provides visitors with a chance to reconnect with nature in all seasons. The property welcomes guests to spectacular gardens, a conservatory dedicated to the display of tropical plants and orchids, sparkling fountains, nearly 6 miles of trails and a dog park. 


The Staff Accountant is responsible for leading and providing support in the areas of finance and accounting for Daniel Stowe Conservancy and its partners. This role is responsible for the administration of accounting functions to include AR, AP, Cost, Fixed Assets, and payroll. The Staff Accountant will orchestrate and coordinate the development of budgets, forecasts, cost information, and financial controls to ensure the best fiscal policies and procedures are met. An ideal candidate will have close working relationships with internal and external partners, an independent worker, attention to detail, and the ability to realize problems and offer solutions.


Responsibilities:

General

  • Understands the importance of each guest and member and drives excellence to ensure an optimal experience in every way.
  • Planned or unplanned weekly communications to individuals and/or organizations.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Exemplifies the mission statements of Stowe and its partners, supporting staff, and leadership in pursuing and achieving goals.
  • Performs any other duties needed to help drive vision, fulfill our mission, and abide by our values.

Accounts Payable & Receivable

  • Manages the comprehensive end-to-end processes for accounts payable and receivable, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. Key tasks include:
  • - Processing, coding, and entering invoices, while supporting payment execution through various methods such as ACH, checks, and wires.
  • - Monitoring outstanding balances and assisting in backlog control, as well as resolving any discrepancies.
  • - Supporting intercompany billing and credit processes, including invoicing, reprints and adjustments as necessary.

Reporting & Reconciliation

  • Prepares and distributes periodic financial reports—daily, monthly, and ad hoc—to support informed business decision-making to include:
  •  - Prepare and enter monthly journal entries.
  •  - Assistance with financial reconciliations monthly, quarterly, and annually or as needed.
  •  - Contributes to the accuracy and completeness of month-end and year-end financial close activities.
  •  - Support in maintaining and updating company's financial records, including general ledger, fixed asset management, amortization schedules, and Capex/CIP reconciliations in accordance with US GAAP.
  •  - Supports internal reporting requirements and helps to monitor exceptions or unmatched transactions.


Operational & Administrative Support

  • Manages incoming financial documentation, including physical mail and check processing. Responsibilities will include:
  •  - Responding to internal service requests and actively participating in backlog or issue resolution meetings.
  •  - Assisting with general administrative tasks and special projects as assigned, enhancing departmental efficiency. 
  •  - Ensures compliance with corporate objectives and systems for accounting, payables, receivables, payroll, and inventory operations as applicable.
  •  - Ensure adequate financial and internal controls.
  •  - Perform financial analyses and special projects as requested.
  •  - Collaborate in process improvement initiatives, special projects including formalization of control procedures.


Requirements

  • Exhibits a passion for the mission of Daniel Stowe Conservancy. 
  • Successfully pass a standard criminal background review.  
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Experience & Education:

  • Experience with QuickBooks Online at a skilled level is required.
  • Associate’s degree in accounting or related field of study.
  • A strong knowledge of accounting functions, supported by a minimum of three years of relevant experience.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills, with the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities.
  • The flexibility and resiliency to work well under pressure and quickly adapt to rapidly changing needs and priorities.
  • Ability to work in a team yet also independently.
