PATH’s Epidemic Preparedness and Response (EPR) initiative leads several projects and initiatives that serve the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) and aim to strengthen global capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats. These include the five-year, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded Global Health Security projects; the State Department STRIDES (Strengthening Infectious disease Detection Systems) Project; and Fleming Fund projects aimed at combatting and preventing the spread of antimicrobial resistance. The Epidemic Preparedness and Response program is seeking an intern to be based in Washington, DC.
Description of the project the intern will complete
Through this internship, the selected candidate(s) will provide support to the EPR initiative on various initiatives, with a focus on support to the STRIDES project. Additionally, the selected candidate(s) will provide coordination and communications support to the EPR Initiative.
Activities will include supporting literature reviews of global health security topics within STRIDES countries, assistance in creating communications materials (ppts, reports, etc) for the STRIDES project and the EPR initiative overall. The intern will participate in project-specific and initiative specific coordination and technical calls and supporting the team on development or refinement of project deliverables.
The intern will be expected to support and facilitate efficient and clear communication across global teams of experts and provide support to new and ongoing projects. The intern may have the opportunity to widen this scope subject to project activities and personal interests.
Benefit to intern
The intern will build skills in project coordination, project management and communications, and will receive hands-on experience supporting complex, multi-country projects within a global health organization. The intern will also receive exposure to concepts and activities fundamental to strengthening health systems to prevent, detect, and respond to epidemics and pandemics. The intern will gain knowledge in health information systems, laboratory systems, outbreak response, and surveillance. Lastly, the intern will gain a deep understanding of how to work across multiple countries and teams in a culturally and programmatically diverse environment.
Description of the learning objectives and goals of the internship
- The intern will be involved in hands-on work related to project coordination and management.
- The intern will build the ability to multi-task and work professionally with various colleagues and mentors within PATH, developing project coordination, management, and organizational skills.
- The intern will deepen their knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of public health, surveillance, epidemiology, emergency preparedness and response, and MEL.
- The intern will gain and utilize experience in proposal writing and report preparation.
Proposed activities for the internship
- Provide support to project start up activities related to the STRIDES project (literature reviews, communication materials, input to technical reports)
- Support PATH’s coordination and programming around health emergencies
- Assist in the coordination of business development opportunities and external affairs, as needed.
- Assist the EPR team with developing and refining donor project reports.
- Participate in regular project calls with country offices.
- Assist in finalizing project deliverables including editorial reviews.
Description of skills and experience the intern should have
- Current student enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program at an accredited university.
- Strong project coordination and management skills, with excellent organizational skills and a high level of attention to detail.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Knowledge of and interest in global health, international development, MEL, and project management.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Outlook, and OneNote.
- Ability to adapt within a fast-paced environment.
- International work or study experience a plus.
- French or Spanish language skills would be a plus

Hours: 20 hours per week
