Job Description

Montgomery College, has an immediate need for a full-time Building and Grounds Maintenance Manager. The typical work schedule is Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. –2:30 p.m. This is a grade 29, non-bargaining, exempt position. The position is located at the Takoma Park, Silver Spring Campus. Montgomery College promotes and creates a working and learning environment rooted in the basic tenets of fairness, belonging, and inclusiveness. 

The Building and Grounds Maintenance Manager, under supervision and/or direction is responsible for providing a clean and sanitary environment for the College community. Provide supervision and guidance to assigned staff. Responsible for the oversight of building service functions such as trash removal (recycled and bulk items), which may include bio-hazardous material. Responsible for the oversight of grounds maintenance functions, such as landscaping, snow removal, storm water management, etc. Provide support for all campus activities such as meetings, celebrations, student activities, athletic events and Commencement (Graduation).

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Schedule, assign, inspect and review work of assigned staff to ensure work is performed according to established standards.
  • Identify and implement goals and objectives for the unit.
  • Conduct recruitment/interviewing and make recommendations to hire.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, formal and informal coaching, and recommend disciplinary action.
  • Evaluate the training needs of staff and coordinate/conduct in-house training.
  • Approve overtime, leave requests and schedules.
  • Serve as a liaison between management and non-management employees.
  • Identify issues and challenges within unit and develop strategies to resolve.
  • Determine staffing levels for special events and staff accordingly.
  • Ensure staff compliance with occupational safety guidelines and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with college policies and procedures, and Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • Ensure adherence to green cleaning program and maintenance protocols.
  • Identify material and equipment needed to perform duties and the type and/or quantities required.
  • Create and track assigned work orders’ progress in work order database to ensure tasks performed are documented.
  • Coordinate with Campus Planner and authorities having jurisdiction to manage landscaping plan.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications, training, certifications and experience:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience performing and leading others in building custodial and grounds maintenance work. Experience working in a union environment.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and techniques of building custodial and grounds maintenance work, tools, equipment, and materials used, and hazard/safety precautions.
  • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of industrial type equipment and tools.
  • Excellent leadership skills and the ability to instruct, train, and work cooperatively with others as well as communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), the Internet, and Windows-based applications and financial/operational management applications (Workday, TMA) may be required.
  • Ability to perform light to heavy duty building custodial work and move and/or lift heavy or large items.
  •  Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Salary range: $72,455 – $94,203 annually.  Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $115,951 annually.
