The City of Lake Worth Beach invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of MD Inspector.
  
 This Full-Time Non-Exempt position is based on a 40-hour work week with a pay rate of $32.35 - $43.54.

 

This position is part of the Public Employees Union (PEU) collective bargaining agreement. The individual in this position will work out of the Community Sustainability Building located at 1900 2nd Ave N, Lake Worth Beach, FL 33460.

JOB SUMMARY:

Interprets, applies, and enforces codes for the City of Lake Worth Beach (COLWB).  Performs activities within area of certification related to disabled access, electrical, fire sprinkler, gas and/or fuel oil, mechanical, plumbing, and/or zoning. Inspects residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Work involves answering questions and concerns regarding requirements and codes, consulting with contractors, designers, and business and homeowners, and supporting the Building Services Division. 

 

Work is performed under minimal supervision with moderate latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. Position relies on experience and subject-matter expertise to apply concepts, techniques, and knowledge of processes in decision making.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Reviews blueprints, plans and interprets architectural renderings to ascertain compliance with codes pertaining to building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and air movement systems (HVAC) and/or zoning, energy, and disabled access; informs contractors regarding code requirements
  • Responds to inquiries regarding plans and code requirements
  • Performs job site and property inspections related to area of licensure and may perform Use and Occupancy inspections
  • Researches codes for approval or disapproval of submitted plans, especially in unusual or unique installations
  • Files new and completed plans; drafts correspondence for disapprovals, ensuring reasons and thorough details are provided, and retains a record for files and/or tracking
  • Reviews new materials and methods used in building construction; attends training courses to learn of new codes and other inspection regulations; provides technical expertise and training as required

Supervision:

  • Schedules, trains, motivates, and evaluates personnel; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; makes recommendations regarding discipline and termination

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by five (5) years of construction experience; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience. 

 

A valid Florida driver license is required.  

 

Certifications: Florida licensure as both an Examiner and Inspector of Building, Residential and Commercial Electrical, Mechanical or Plumbing Plans; or ability to obtain Florida licensure or qualify for a board approved Florida internship certification training program within one (1) year of employment.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of building, electrical, mechanical, and/or plumbing, zoning, energy, and disabled access codes and regulations affecting work
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of the construction industry including building and related materials and tools
  • Knowledge of Use and Occupancy requirements and codes, and minimum housing code
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, and Excel) and applicable department and organization specific software and to learn and become proficient in the use of other specialized software as may be required
  • Skill in basic math including but not limited to adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, geometric construction, practical algebra and metrics
  • Skill in providing good customer service
  • Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints and associated plans
  • Skill in enforcing building codes and regulations in a tactful and impartial manner 
    • Ability to clearly communicate and understand information in English, both orally and in writing
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
    • Ability to use reasoning skills that minimize duplication of efforts, including but not limited to comparing, classifying, analyzing and coordinating
    • Ability to consistently exercise discretion and independent judgment in the performance of the job 
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation, sexual orientation, and diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
    • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and/or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery and/or moving vehicles, vibrations, electric currents, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils and other cutting fluids, violence and/or disease, or pathogenic substances.

 

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.

 

All full-time employees are considered critical in response to emergency situations and may be deemed essential as needed depending on the situation.   

Employees in this position will be required to complete the FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) Certification Levels 100,200,700 and 800 within the first six months of employment.  Certain positions may be required to attain additional ICS training as needed.
