What you'll do  

The Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) Specialist is responsible for monitoring alerts and preparing daily reports under the BSA Compliance Program. They will work with BSA team leadership to ensure controls are effective and used as needed by credit union employees and work with necessary parties to resolve any issues. They will assist with the creation of new controls, procedures and training materials for BSA.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Maintain a high level of service by delivering Canvas Core Values to both internal and external members.
  • Ensure that the BSA program, monitoring, and reporting are in compliance with organizational policies and procedures, and with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Monitor OFAC and other watch list reports to ensure no matches, and respond accordingly to a positive match.
  • Compare member and other covered names and transactions to the watch lists to ensure no covered parties are currently on the lists, and respond accordingly to a positive match.
  • Monitor alerts generated to identify structuring, money laundering, and other suspicious activity to ensure Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) are being created and filed as required.
  • Monitor excessive cash reports and submitted Currency Transaction Reports (CTRs) to ensure accuracy. File required CTRs with federal agencies as required by BSA.
  • Research and review all ATM deposits greater than $10,000 to ensure that CTRs are filed if necessary.
  • Work with Retail Operations to ensure all Customer Identification Program (CIP) and Customer Due Diligence (CDD) requirements are met according to procedure and follow up with the appropriate people when necessary.
  • Work closely with BSA team leadership on the review of processes and preparation for audits and exams.
  • Maintain accurate reporting, appropriate tracking and measurement of department activity and results.
  • Actively promote and contribute to the achievement of organizational goals.
  • Comply with Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and other compliance requests and requirements.
  • Follow all safety and security guidelines to properly safeguard member and organization assets.
  • Recommend and help develop and implement new controls, policies and procedures and training materials.
  • Embrace ongoing education and learn/apply new skills and software applications.
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate filing system.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to explain programs, features, policies and procedures to employees, members and business partners.
  • Strong relationship building and teamwork skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of Canvas’ financial products and services.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Ability to maintain confidences.
  • Pre-employment background review (components include criminal, employment, address, social security number, motor vehicle record, global sanctions, and sex offender).
  • Current Canvas employees must be meeting performance expectations and consistently demonstrating HEART behaviors to be considered.

Education or Formal Training:  Two-year college degree or completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school or equivalent work experience.

Experience: 1-3 years of similar or related experience.

Working Environment/Physical Activities

High volume, fast-paced office environment.  The job routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, copiers, fax machines and filing cabinets.  The position requires manual dexterity, the ability to lift files and open filing cabinets.  The position requires bending, stooping, or standing as necessary.
