About the Role

We are seeking detail-oriented and experienced freelance writers to craft concise, accurate, and accessible alt text descriptions for educational materials, including graphs, charts, tables, diagrams, and photographs. The ideal candidate will have experience writing alt text with a strong focus on accessibility for users with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Write clear, concise, and context-appropriate alt text descriptions for various types of images, including graphs, charts, maps, diagrams, and photographs, as per the provided guidelines.

• Review the surrounding text to understand the context and adapt alt text accordingly.

• Ensure descriptions do not exceed 200-250 characters, including spaces.

• Use active verbs in the present tense, avoid interpretation, and stick to what is depicted in the image.

• Mention important details like labels, trends, axes on graphs, etc., where applicable.

• Maintain adherence to specific formatting guidelines (e.g., spacing for abbreviations, handling of special characters, and avoiding unnecessary phrases such as “An image of…”).

• Conduct thorough proofreading for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.

• Follow American English conventions.

Qualifications and Skills

• Proven experience in writing alt text, especially for educational or scientific content.

• Familiarity with accessibility guidelines for visual content.

• Excellent command of the English language, with an emphasis on spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

• Strong understanding of various types of visual content like graphs, tables, diagrams, and flowcharts.

• Ability to follow specific formatting and content guidelines meticulously.

• Attention to detail and an ability to convey complex visual information in a concise and clear manner.

• Familiarity with educational terminology and technical vocabulary is a plus.
