The Survey Superintendent is responsible for directing and managing all survey operations across assigned projects. This role ensures that survey layouts are precise, equipment is utilized effectively, and project requirements are executed to the highest standard. The Survey Superintendent works closely with project management, engineering, and field operations teams to deliver accurate layouts for equipment, trenching, conduit systems, and structural supports while upholding safety, quality, and schedule commitments.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead the survey team in daily layout operations using Trimble and GPS equipment.
  • Ensure that all equipment is calibrated and localized to project control points.
  • Verify that the project control points were captured correctly by others and adequate locations are provided for proper equipment calibrations.
  • Plan, assign, and review survey work related to:
    • Equipment pad and foundation layouts
    • Trench routing, depth verification, and slope confirmation
    • Underground and overhead conduit pathways
    • Openings, racks, hangers, and structural supports requiring precise layout
  • Ensure all survey data and as-builts are accurate, documented, and integrated with project models (BIM, CAD, etc.).
  • Verify trench and installation depths meet electrical and civil code requirements.
  • Coordinate with construction managers, superintendents, and foremen to meet project layout needs on schedule.
  • Train and mentor survey technicians in the proper use of Trimble GPS equipment, data management, and field verification methods.
  • Perform quality checks on survey layouts.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot Trimble/GPS equipment; coordinate calibration and service as needed.
  • Enforce safety practices for survey activities in active construction environments.
  • Provide daily and weekly reporting on survey progress, challenges, and resource needs.
  • Ensure survey equipment is secured and stored properly along with any necessary maintenance.
  • Ensure that all survey equipment is updated and operating with the latest firmware.
  • Ensure that all required as built data are captured correctly, meets project requirements, and formatted for future use.

Qualifications

  • Ability to walk job sites as needed for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift survey equipment (up to 50 lbs).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Strong knowledge of Trimble GPS systems, data collection, and layout processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, civil plans, and BIM models.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, or related layout/coordination software a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as required.

  • The inherent responsibilities of your role may include physical working conditions. In order to safely and successfully perform job duties you must be able to:  
    • Potentially lift up to 50 pounds 
    • Potentially need to do repeated pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching (or working above shoulder), walking, standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, and climbing  
    • Potentially operate a motor vehicle, crane, tractor, etc.
