Working with our business partners to create, improve and sustain industry and infrastructure.  Orbital Engineering has been driven by this core purpose for more than 50 years - energizing Orbital team members and helping our clients solve challenging and complex problems with innovative engineering, inspection, and construction solutions.  Orbital team members are guided by the fundamental beliefs of building trusted relationships, personal accountability, innovation, and excellence in everything we do.  Orbital is looking for others to join our team to continue activating our purpose and embrace our values.

The Director of Information Technology (IT) is a senior leadership role responsible for building, leading, and modernizing Orbital Engineering’s enterprise IT function across infrastructure, cybersecurity, systems administration, and end-user technologies. This position ensures that Orbital’s IT environment is secure, scalable, compliant, and aligned with the company’s business strategy and the Technology & Innovation (TIN) division’s multi-year digital transformation roadmap. This is a fully remote position within the United States.

The Director will drive the stability and performance of core business systems (e.g., UKG, Deltek Vantagepoint, Microsoft 365/Entra, Egnyte, Oracle, AWS), oversee enterprise networking and cloud environments, manage vendor relationships, and support ongoing SOC 2 Type II, data governance, and cybersecurity initiatives. This individual partners closely with Operations, Finance, HR, TIN Management, and the CTO to deliver reliable technology services and advance Orbital’s future-state IT architecture.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Position duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

IT Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and execute Orbital’s enterprise IT strategy in alignment with corporate objectives and the TIN roadmap.
  • Establish an IT operating model, governance structure, and performance standards for all IT services.
  • Lead, mentor, and build a high-performing IT team, including enterprise systems, service desk, networking, cloud, and cybersecurity functions.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to the CTO on enterprise IT needs, risks, and strategic investments.

Infrastructure & Cloud Management

  • Oversee corporate networking, servers, cloud environments (Azure, AWS, M365, Entra), and endpoint management.
  • Lead modernization efforts including cloud migration, device lifecycle programs, IT standardization, and identity/access management.
  • Develop policies and procedures for network resilience, server patching, asset management, and disaster recovery.

Cybersecurity, Compliance & Risk

  • Lead the operational execution of cybersecurity controls in partnership with the Information Security & Compliance Manager, who owns cybersecurity governance and compliance oversight.
  • Support SOC 2 Type II readiness: evidence collection, control implementation, audit preparation, and continuous monitoring.
  • Maintain security tools, identity governance, vulnerability management, and incident response protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with PII handling procedures, vendor risk management, and data protection standards.

Enterprise Systems & Business Applications

  • Provide strategic oversight of Orbital’s core enterprise applications, including Deltek Vantagepoint, UKG, Egnyte, Oracle Aconex, and Microsoft 365 collaboration tools.
  • Lead and support the Enterprise Systems Manager, who is responsible for day-to-day system administration, configuration, updates, integrations, and user support.
  • Ensure enterprise systems align with business processes across Operations, Finance, HR, and Project Management, driving efficiency and standardization.
  • Oversee enterprise application governance, security controls, permissioning standards, and application change management, in partnership with the Enterprise Systems Manager.
  • Collaborate with TIN managers to align IT architecture with product, data, and operational demands.

IT Service Management (ITSM) & Operations

  • Establish the overall IT service management framework, including SLAs, service delivery standards, and performance expectations.
  • Provide leadership and strategic guidance to the IT Support Manager, ensuring consistent execution of daily support operations.
  • Ensure effective ITSM tools, reporting, and metrics are in place for incident, request, and change management.
  • Oversee major incident escalation, communication, and post-incident review, ensuring issues are resolved quickly and root causes are addressed.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement in IT service delivery, user experience, and operational excellence.
  • Monitor service performance data and partner with the IT Support Manager to drive efficiency, consistency, and reliability in IT operations.

Vendor Management & Budgeting

  • Manage strategic vendor relationships for hardware, software, cloud services, and MSP partners.
  • Evaluate new technologies and cost-effective solutions that advance Orbital’s enterprise architecture.
  • Develop and oversee the IT budget, including forecasting, procurement, licensing, and contract renewals.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive IT experience, including 5+ years leading IT teams or functions.
  • Strong technical knowledge across infrastructure, networking, cloud, cybersecurity, and enterprise systems.
  • Experience supporting SOC 2, ISO 27001, NIST, or similar security/compliance frameworks.
  • Proven ability to lead organizational change, build processes, and mature IT functions.
  • Demonstrated success implementing IT governance, ITSM processes, and enterprise system improvements.

Preferred:

  • Experience in engineering, construction, field services, or industrial environments.
