 The Waterfront Engineer supports complex ship repair and facilities projects across production, facilities, and waterfront operations. This role provides technical expertise in vessel docking, mooring, and repair engineering while ensuring shipyard infrastructure and support systems meet operational requirements. The position bridges engineering and execution—supporting safe, efficient, and compliant project delivery across multiple departments.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


FACILITIES DEPARTMENTS SPECIFIC DUTIES:

- Manages the cost, quality, and schedule of assigned projects.

- Participates with other organizational leaders to develop, interpret, and implement policies and procedures for the organization.

- Interacts clearly, constructively, and positively with all functional departments and senior leadership to ensure projects are completed on-time and with minimal disruption to planned events. 

- Collaborates with other departments to determine project elements and priorities.

- Ensures adherence with governing regulatory and port authorities, environmental and safety compliance, permitting agencies and, adherence to building codes and permitting requirements for applicable projects. 

- Solicits and provides supporting documentation for cost estimates on design, labor, and materials, along with other project costs related to capital project programs.

- Works cooperatively with clients to build and maintain relationships.

- Supports the development of both short- and long-term plans for the organization to include capital investments such as quay wall replacements, new floating drydocks, utility upgrades, and building upgrades. 


WATERFRONT OPERATIONS SPECIFIC DUTIES:


- Manages the Waterfront Operations Department and associated operations

o Supports the Waterfront Operations department with the development of safe ship mooring plans. 

o Supports the planning and scheduling of ship movements, dockings and inclines, ordering tugs and pilots, positioning of vessel at piers and coordinating ship and barge movements.

o Develops docking and undocking calculations as well as supports the execution of vessel dockings. 


PRODUCTION SUPPORT SPECIFIC DUTIES:


- Develop and revise structural repair drawings, including shell plate renewals, insert repairs, stiffener replacements, bulkhead renewals, and foundation modifications.

- Produce detailed sketches and templates for steel repairs, incorporating field measurements, photos, and inspection reports.

- Support pre-fabrication planning by creating shop sketches, nesting layouts, and bill of materials (BOMs).

- Coordinate with shipfitters, welders, and quality inspectors to verify as-built conditions and ensure drawings are accurate and constructible.

- Prepare as-built documentation following completion of repairs, maintaining revision control in accordance with shipyard document management procedures.

- Interface with naval architects, engineers, and regulatory agencies (ABS, NAVSEA, USCG, etc.) for drawing review and approval as required.

- Maintain and update drawing libraries and standards, ensuring compliance with company drafting practices and project-specific requirements.

Requirements

  REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


- Bachelor’s degree in marine engineering, naval architecture, or related field (or equivalent experience). 

- Experience in the operation of floating drydocks.

- 3+ years of experience working within the Maritime industry

- Proficiency in AutoCAD 

- Familiarity with ISO drawing standards

- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

- Experience Performing Mooring and Vessel Stability Calculations

- Experience Performing Vessel Docking and Undocking Calculations

- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; able to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.

- Ability to work in both office and field environments, including shipboard inspections.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


- Experience drafting vessel repair plans

- Experience performing docking and undocking calculations for a Marine Travel Lift. 

- Strong knowledge of steel structures, welding symbols, and ship construction terminology.

- Familiarity with ABS/NAVSEA standards, repair practices, and shipyard procedures.

- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and survey reports.

- Lean Six Sigma Certification 

- Familiarity with Navy Regulations NSTM 997 and MILD-STD-1625D
