Position Summary: The Jr. Paralegal supports Atlanta Habitat’s mission of building affordable housing and strengthening communities by assisting in the management and coordination of legal matters related to Atlanta Habitat’s home purchase and preservation programs. This role ensures legal compliance, facilitates communication between stakeholders, and helps resolve legal issues that may arise during the implementation of Atlanta Habitat’s programs. The Jr. Paralegal reports to the Sr. Paralegal and is part of the Homeowner Services team.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Home Purchase and Preservation Programs:
- Record property deeds in the applicable local courts for each completed house closing.
- Prepare letters and distribute recorded documents and owner’s title policy to homeowners including home-stead exemption application and instructions as applicable.
- Prepare and send title insurance packages to the Title Insurance Attorney.
- Examine title commitments and final title policies for accuracy.
- Prepare all security deed cancellations for homeowners whose loans and security deeds have matured.
- File recorded closing documents, title insurance policies, and cancellations in the mortgage files.
- Assist with preparation of Loan Estimates and closing documents.
- Prepare and manage all closing exhibits.
- Assist with other administrative closing tasks, as needed.
- Assist with post-closing requirements.
Other:
- Copy documents from the mortgage file as needed for down payment assistance application.
- Copy legal documents as required to assist in the transfer of mortgage accounts to our loan servicing company.
- Other tasks as requested by the Sr. Paralegal or the Homeowner Services Team.
Requirements
Education/Professional Credentials
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
- Paralegal Certificate a plus.
Experience
- Minimum of two-three years of administrative experience in housing, finance, real estate, or legal fields.
Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with loan closing procedures.
- Proactive, collaborative team player with a positive attitude and ability to be successful in a constantly changing environment.
- Strong problem-solving, decision making, and analytical ability.
- In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of Salesforce preferred.
- Well-organized and detail oriented.
- Self-driven with the ability to work effectively with minimal direction.
- Ability to work well with a diverse group of staff members, volunteers, and community leaders.
