Key Responsibilities
- Pitch and write magazine-style features, blogs, and other articles about Earth and climate science for the public.
- Read primary scientific literature and “translate” information for non-expert audiences, adhering to best practices for avoiding plagiarism.
- Identify and interview subject matter experts and incorporate material in written products according to journalistic standards.
- Work through multiple review cycles with subject matter experts and project lead editor until the information or product is scientifically accurate and understandable by the targeted public and in the right format and style.
- Produce written content for technical publications, reports, brochures, speeches, and audiovisual materials for a variety of audiences, and go through multiple review cycles, as needed, with project lead and subject matter experts until it is scientifically accurate, understandable, and usable by the targeted audience.
- Work with graphics and data visualization experts to select and/or develop graphics for stories, blogs, and other web or print content.
- Support the development of messaging and rollout plans for social media campaigns, and work with designers to produce images, videos, and animations that are optimized for different social media platforms. Use cloud-based social media management apps (HootSuite, Buffer) to schedule and post content to social media channels.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, or Marketing plus at least 10 years experience writing about Earth science and climate for the public, with an emphasis on the cryosphere.
- Must have an existing network of scientific experts that can be consulted for stories.
- Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as well as Drupal and WordPress content management systems.
- Ability to do basic html coding.
- Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced environment with daily production deadlines.
- History working for NASA Earth Observatory or NOAA Climate.gov websites.
