ANALYST/ENGINEER – Project Analysis & Market Assessment
Position Summary
This position is in the Project Analysis & Market Assessment (PAMA) team within the Southern Power Company (SPC) Finance organization. The PAMA team is responsible for SPC’s operating margin projections, integrated resource planning, asset data reporting, and providing structuring and analytical support for both SPC’s long-term marketing and short-term asset optimization efforts.
This position works closely with various groups (within SPC and Southern Company Services) including business development, generation support, resource planning, and commercial optimization & trading.
This position is located in Birmingham. Overnight travel is limited, typically one night per quarter.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required. Majors in Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or other related technical fields desired
- Master’s degree in these fields or MBA is desired
Experience
Work experience in one or more of the following areas is desired:
- Wholesale/retail utility finance (including proforma & cash flow analysis)
- Risk analysis
- Power pool/plant economic operations
- Wholesale product structuring and/or business development
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong problem-solving skills with a desire to understand complex problems is required
- Ability to perform independently and successfully meet deadlines is required
- Extensive working knowledge and high-level proficiency with Microsoft Excel is required; working knowledge of Visual Basic is desired
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills (including the ability to present complex information) are required
- Attention to detail and strong motivation for quality and accuracy is required
- Experience and proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint is desired

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain the SPC Integrated Resource Plan
- Develop customer capacity revenue forecasts consistent with contracts by analyzing load forecasts and customer resources
- Provide analytical and structuring support to the Business Development group in order to successfully remarket SPC’s assets
- Assist in the development of financial projections for SPC assets
- Develop and utilize tools to monitor and report on actual operation of SPC’s assets
- Produce contract coverage reports to assist with Southern Company’s Earnings Calls, 10-Q and 10-K financial filings, and rating agency discussions
- Special projects and assignments as needed
