Copper Mountain Resort is a vacation destination located 75 miles west of Denver, Colorado in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Copper Mountain Resort is also home to Woodward Copper action-sports camps, programs, and training facility.

Job Title: Senior Patrol

Job Status: On-Call

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Compensation: Proposed hiring rate of $31.50 to $35.60+, actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.

  • Benefits: This is a seasonal position eligible for a season pass for employees. Several discount programs (i.e. food & beverage, retail/rental, etc.) also available. 

Job Summary:

Senior Patrollers may have extensive experience in a variety of disciplines including but not limited to snow safety and terrain management, medical, risk management and General patrol duties.

The roll of the winter/summer patroller is to ensure a reasonably safe skiing/biking environment. To provide medical assistance and evacuation, guest safety, search and rescue support, trail work, lift evacuation, daily duty station responsibilities, equipment maintenance, and other assigned duties. Each task requires a high level of decision making. Computers (proficiency in Microsoft Office programs), technical rope experience.

Winter

  • Must be an expert skier or rider

  • Hold current (or be enrolled in) Colorado or National EMT (or higher) and current CPR certification

  • Patrol or mountaineering experience preferred

  • Must be 21 years old

  • Must have valid US driver’s license.

Summer – In addition to winter requirements

  • Scheduling flexibility; work weekends, holidays, events and Camp Woodward and other activities

  • Intermediate mountain biker

  • Have a mountain bike to use at work

  • Lift Evacuation cable rider / gondola proficiency

  • Collaborate with mountain bike trail crew to assist with trail maintenance

  • Work on patrol related summer projects as they surface

Responsibilities may include:

  • Terrain management: Planning and implementation of daily avalanche control routes, explosives applications including leading, directing and supporting other patrollers in correct and successful mitigation techniques. Coordinating early season boot packing missions includes medical evacuation concerns as well as manpower resource needs, and daily terrain management and pre-planning for future work missions.

  • Medical: Extensive medical experience and skill including higher levels of training such as EMT-P; advanced positive interpersonal aptitudes with the ability to teach advanced skills, documentation, as well as participate in continuing quality improvement programs; also capable of delivering the results of such programs in a professional, positive manner.

  • Risk Management: Wide-ranging experience in ski industry risk management to include the investigator role as well as experience developing and improving documentation. Skilled at keeping pace with current technical opportunities and not only comfortable using all types of IT devices, but excels at leveraging a variety of software programs to improve our current process. Endeavors to reach and deliver a high level of understanding about all risk management processes and able to educate less experienced staff to our processes involving risk management and electronic documentation and empower them for success.

  • General Patrol duties: Advanced ability to teach less experienced staff any aspect of patrol duties and processes. A positive, professional, attitude with both guests and other staff. Able to contribute to the success of both patrol goals and company goals by understanding the patrols involvement in the overall success of the company. May play a large role in training less experienced staff and may be asked to fill in for foreman in any task. Demonstrates the highest level of teamwork, operations knowledge, and sets the example for the rest of the patrol. Has experience leading various internal departments and can mentor Lead Patrollers to take on increase roles in those departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Winter

  • History of decent and respectable decision making, solid communication skills and strong leadership qualities, consistent safety record and background in ski patrol risk management.

  • Continued quality improvement in any area of involvement.

  • Mentoring less experienced staff.

  • Strive to deliver a safe environment and work to continually improve all aspects of patrol required to advance our safety process and program.

  • Professional interactions with patrol staff, other operations staff and copper mountain staff.

Summer

  • Intermediate mountain biker

  • Cable rider

Administration Duties:

  • Responsible for follow through on any aspect of patrol documentation to include training, reports, and or investigations. High level of understanding on all software used by the patrol to include, IRIS, Photoshop, excel, word, outlook, and access. Worthy interpersonal skills, can leverage positive and successful relationships both internally – with all patrollers, and externally – with members of other business units and organizations at Copper, and looks to reach outside the industry, perhaps outside Risk Management meetings, ISSW, Patrol Director meetings.

  • Leadership in the Mentor Program – working with rookies one-on-one, or any patroller to help them success.

Guest Service Duties:

  • Expert at conflict resolution, can lead by example in all aspects of guest service, has the knowledge to know where to find most information in relation to guest concerns and or complaints.

  • Support the patrol guest service committee and all aspects of continually improving guest relations, both directly and indirectly as needed.

  • Has history of providing great guest service through educational opportunities as they pertain to compliance with the Colorado skier safety act.

  • This position is a seasonal position and may have fluctuations in hours worked based upon overall business volumes.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Senior patroller will set a good example for level I, II and III patrollers and can be relied upon to provide leadership, advanced training, and program development for all staff.

  • Senior patrollers need to possess a calm, professional demeanor and a willingness to do anything the situation might require. Creative thinking and a solid problem-solving technique is a must. It is necessary to be a well-rounded Patroller and to satisfy the daily expectations of a line level worker as well as provide strong leadership when needed. A solid sense of commitment and a strong work ethic are the qualities required for this position.

Basic Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry toboggans weighing as much as seventy pounds. Other tasks include skiing difficult conditions, high elevations, carrying and transporting unwieldy materials such as tower pads and medical equipment, and working in cold and often inclement conditions. No history of injuries or physical limitations permitted.

  • Must be able to hear and speak clearly in order to communicate via radios and telephones, must be able to hear beacon signals and skiers requesting assistance.

  • Due to the sensitive nature of this position, a criminal background check will be conducted after position is accepted. This background check will be done in accordance with standards enacted under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

  • Must have a valid US Driver’s license.

  • This position may require the use of a motor vehicle and the employee is subject to comply with the Driver’s Standards of Copper Mountain

  • Must be at least 21 years old

Preferred Experience and Special Skills:

  • All phases of training will be the responsibility of the senior patrollers, including medical, risk management and terrain management. This may include all aspects of the level 1, 2, and lead patroller

  • Completion of Level I-III Avalanche Schools.

  • Current State of Colorado Blasters Certification.

  • Avalauncher Operation Training.

  • Competent in snow cat and snowmobile operation

  • Advanced medical skills

  • Advanced training in risk management

  • Advanced computer skills

  • Experienced leading internal departments

  • 5 years’ minimum experience in snow safety work, is necessary to become a forecaster (may not all be at Copper Mountain Resort) and a background in snow analysis and data compilation.
