The Ink Technician develops color formulas and mixes screen printing inks, adhesives and other coatings for production according to customer requirements and work instructions. Mixes standard and pre-matched colors, prints sample swatch and performs color check per ticket specifications. Uses various color measurement instruments, and maintains ink inventories and color records.
Responsibilities
- Organize and plan workflow with floor supervisor to ensure all inks are pre-matched and press ready to maximize production time at press.
- Formulate and provide clean accurate color samples for customer approval on a timely basis using ink-mixing technology.
- Estimate quantity of ink to be mixed for given jobs and pro-types according to coverage requirements.
- Recommends ink series based on current Ink and Substrate Matrix and customer requirements.
- Ensure tickets are up to date with correct mesh and ink information to ensure that production staff use appropriate materials to minimize scrap and re-work time.
- Performs quality check on all inks prior to mixing, checking traceability, using available ink quality testing technology.
- Set up and maintain customer files including specifications, swatches, formulas, signed approved samples, maintaining records according to established processes.
- Uses Spectrophotometer and Spectroradiometer according to established instructions and industry best practices to match colors and meet customer requirements.
- Maintains adequate inventory of inks and supplies as needed for the ink department and notifies purchasing when inventories are low or otherwise required for production in a timely manner to ensure availability and on-time shipments to customer.
- Maintain clean equipment, and work area and support departmental 6S standards.
- Maintain waste ink dump area; communicate with HazComm and dept. supervisor when barrels are ready for disposal. Experiment with new and improved formulations when needed, using spectrophotometer, customer standard or sample, and practical experience; to minimize ink usage, simplify formula, and make process more repeatable.
- Give input on selection and training of ink department employees.
- Inspect department production output as needed
- Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications/Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Strong attention to detail/color management with a focus on quality at all times
- Proficient with MS Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) and use of a PC
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
- Reading comprehension, understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents in English.
- Good math and analytical skills
- Good decision making skills
- Ability to plan and organize work activities with focus on efficiency
- Ability to work under time constraints with changing priorities under minimal supervision
- Must be able to follow directions and work in a team environment
