About the Department

MPRB's Visitor Services Department is seeking a well-rounded and outgoing Community Events Supervisor to provide daily management and oversight of the city-wide events function for the Park Board. Coordinates, plans, organizes, controls, and monitors activities to ensure delivery of events that are consistent with the organization’s comprehensive plan and the mission and goals of the MPRB. Provides leadership to staff in the community events work unit within Visitor Services that meet the park and recreation needs of diverse communities and ensure race equity, gender inclusion, and universal access.

Position Duties

  • Responsible for providing effective day-to-day supervision and operation of the city-wide Community Events function.
  • Exercise independent judgment to supervise, hire, transfer, suspend, promote, discharge, assign work, reward, or discipline subordinate staff. Train, coach, develop, evaluate, and monitor MPRB community events staff at multiple locations throughout the city. Organize daily work projects, assignments, and activities. Maintain an effective, respectful, and productive work environment.
  • Effectively oversee all MPRB operated city-wide special events including but not limited to; Music and Movies in the Park Series, Show mobile operations, regional/community events and festivals, and department partnered events.
  • Develop and oversee new events in accordance with new trends in the event industry and events focused on achieving Park Board initiatives.
  • Work effectively with community organizations, City Staff, private and public agencies, and other groups to plan and coordinate MPRB events, including being involved in organizing committees and coordinating meetings.
  • Effectively allocate the event unit budget and oversee budget recommendations, goals, and statistics including payroll approval, department petty cash account/P-card tracking, event budget development and monitoring appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Provide appropriate and timely support and resources for other department sponsored events, i.e. ribbon cuttings, volunteer recognition, and park events, and approve events unit involvement.
  • Proactively and effectively supervise licensing and permit requirements for movies, concerts, and food vendors for city-wide events and festivals.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
  • Create a healthy, safe, respectful work environment for Park Board employees, customers, and the public.
  • Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.

Minimum Qualifications

Need to Have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Event Management, Parks and Recreation, Recreation Programming, or related field.
  • Increasingly responsible experience in lifecycle coordination of special events: at least four (4) years.
  • Experience supervising others: at least three (3) years.
  • Experience supervising unionized employees: at least two (2) years.
  • An equivalent combination of related experience and education and training may be considered.
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
Nice to Have: 
  • Experience securing partnerships and sponsorships to support programming and events: at least two (2) years. 
Skills Crucial to Success in This Role: 
  • Knowledge of best practices for event and project planning, coordination and execution, and follow up.
  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and best practices of personnel management and supervision.
  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and best practices of budget management and development.
  • Skills and ability to apply for and manage the process of obtaining all proper licenses and permits for all department events.
  • Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.

Selection Process:

What steps the selection process involves:

  • We review your minimum qualifications.
  • We rate your training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions (30%).
  • We conduct a structured panel interview (oral exam) (70%).
  • We calculate your civil service score based on the above components and place you on the eligible list if all testing components are passed (passing score for each component and as an overall score is 70.00 or above). Eligible list will expire in three (3) months.
  • We refer the top finalists to the hiring manager for an interview.
  • References, including verification of employment and work performance, may be considered.
  • We conduct a background check. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought.
